Jlloyd Tafari Samuel, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in England, had a successful career as a professional footballer playing as both a defender and midfielder. He played for England's under-21 team and also represented Trinidad and Tobago in two full international matches in 2009.

The accident took place in High Legh, Cheshire. The driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured, while Samuel died on the spot.
