Jlloyd Tafari Samuel, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in England, had a successful career as a professional footballer playing as both a defender and midfielder. He played for England's under-21 team and also represented Trinidad and Tobago in two full international matches in 2009.

Samuel began his football journey playing for junior team Senrab, and later joined the academies of West Ham United and Charlton Athletic before becoming a trainee with Aston Villa's youth team in 1997. He went on to make 198 appearances for Villa before moving to Bolton Wanderers in 2007, where he played for four years, including a short loan spell at Cardiff City. Jlloyd Tafari Samuel, who was serving as the player-manager of Egerton, an amateur team based in Cheshire, died on 15 May 2018, at the age of 37, in a fatal collision with a van while he was driving his Range Rover back home after dropping off his children at school. The accident took place in High Legh, Cheshire. The driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured, while Samuel died on the spot. Aston Villa paid their respects to him by wearing black armbands during their Championship play-off match against Middlesbrough that evening, and Egerton FC canceled all their remaining games that week.

The inquest into Samuel's death, which was held in November 2019, revealed that he had been twice the drink-driving limit, and his car had crossed onto the wrong side of the road, leading to a head-on collision. Samuel's body was burned so badly in the accident that he had to be identified using dental records and a blood sample that matched the DNA on his hairbrush. Prior to the inquest, Samuel's sister accused his widow of faking his death and demanded that the samples be released to her for testing.
