What is Laureus Sports Awards?
The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual event that recognizes exceptional individuals and teams from the world of sports, as well as sporting achievements throughout the year. Established in 1999 by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation's founding patrons Daimler and Richemont, the awards are supported by global partners such as Mercedes-Benz, IWC Schaffhausen, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.
The awards aim to support the work of Laureus Sport for Good, which runs over 160 community projects in more than 40 countries. These programs use the power of sport to combat violence, discrimination, and disadvantage, proving that sport has the potential to change the world. The name "Laureus" comes from the Greek word for laurel, which is a traditional symbol of victory in athletics.
The first Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony was held on 25 May 2000 in Monte Carlo, where South African President Nelson Mandela gave the keynote speech. Since then, the awards have been given out annually in eight categories, with a few discretionary categories also recognized irregularly. Each award recipient is presented with a Laureus statuette, created by Cartier, at the annual ceremony held in various locations around the world.
The ceremonies have been held in eleven different cities as of 2020 and are broadcast in at least 160 countries. The record for the most awards held is currently held by Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, with six awards, and the record for the most awards held by a female is held by Serena Williams, with five awards.
In the 2020 ceremony, Argentine Lionel Messi became the first footballer to win the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award and the first athlete to win the award coming from a team sport. Did Lionel Messi Win Laureus Sports Award?

History of Laureus Sports Awards
Laureus is an organization that was established in 1998 by a partnership between Richemont and Daimler. It was founded to promote charitable causes, and the organization's name, "Laureus," comes from the Greek word for laurel, which is a traditional symbol of victory in athletics. Two years after its establishment, Laureus held its first World Sports Awards ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by American actors Jeff Bridges and Dylan McDermott and included seven regular categories and two discretionary categories.
