Loop Hero Guide

Tips for Beginners to Master Loop Hero

If you’re new to Loop Hero, it can be a bit overwhelming to understand how to play. This game takes bits and pieces from other games and shuffles them into something new. Here are some beginner’s tips to help you untangle the complexities of Loop Hero:

1. Place your cards and equip your hero for their endless loop

While in a loop, the hero traverses the environment on their own and eliminates adversaries that yield various rewards such as equipment, cards, and resources. As the outfitter, your role is to oversee the equipment that the hero acquires, comparing the statistics of each item and equipping the one with superior attributes. Additionally, as the hero battles, you construct the world by strategically placing cards throughout the map, intensifying the loop's complexity. During the intervals between loops, you will be responsible for designing and constructing various structures in the hero's camp such as a farm, smithy, and herbalist's hut.

2. Know Your Three Roles in Loop Hero

What sets Loop Hero apart is that the player doesn't have direct control over the character's movement or combat. Instead, the game assigns the player three unique yet interconnected roles: outfitter, world-builder, and city planner.

3. Don't Overwhelm Your Hero

In Loop Hero, placing cards is equivalent to creating obstacles that the hero must overcome in exchange for greater rewards. While it may be tempting to play every card as soon as it becomes available, it is wiser to exercise restraint, particularly with enemy-generating cards. Overwhelming the hero with challenges can be counterproductive, so it is advisable to spread them out strategically, holding onto the more difficult ones until the optimal moment and taking time to consider their placement carefully.

4. Experiment with Card Placement for Weird Combinations

Placing cards is straightforward enough. But some cards behave differently based on what’s nearby. Also, experiment with card placement and check if you get any unexpected effects.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Day Meter

Loop Hero employs a timing mechanism called "day," which is denoted by the green gauge located in the upper left corner of the screen. This gauge serves as a graphical representation of the underlying calculations that dictate various aspects of the game, including daily health bonuses and enemy spawn rates. The day meter advances during adventure mode and pauses when in planning mode.

6. Balance Your Three Roles

Successfully playing Loop Hero involves maintaining a balance between the three assigned tasks, starting with ensuring that the hero does not become overburdened. The player must weigh the hero's survival against the potential rewards of confronting various challenges. Striking a balance is key, as defeating more enemies results in the acquisition of more cards and better equipment.

7. Know How to Unlock New Classes

As you gather resources, you can unlock new camp buildings that will unlock new cards and classes. This will give you new strategies to try and new ways to play the game.

Loop Hero Gameplay

At the outset of each expedition in Loop Hero, the hero embarks on a fixed path through an unoccupied landscape. Along the way, slimes periodically emerge, prompting the hero to engage in combat to acquire landscape cards. These cards allow the player to place a variety of terrain features, including meadows, mountains, forests, and buildings, along the path. Each terrain feature has a unique effect, such as restoring health, increasing movement speed, or spawning enemies. By combining different terrain features, the player can modify their effects, such as combining mountains to increase health restoration and spawn new enemy types.

In addition to landscape cards, defeating enemies can also yield new equipment and resources that the player can use immediately or save for later use. The player can utilize their collected resources to construct new structures such as kitchens or blacksmiths back at the starting base.

The game primarily takes place on the procedurally generated path where the player must upgrade the hero's equipment and position terrain elements strategically to overcome progressively difficult enemies.

As the hero places landscape cards, the boss meter fills up, and a final boss spawns at the end of the path. Successfully defeating the boss progresses the story, while losing a battle causes the player to lose 70% of their resources and retreat back to their base to start over.

Loop Hero Tips and Tricks

Know When to Quit - If you find yourself low on health or lack the confidence to defeat an enemy or boss, it may be wise to end the run early. You will retain more of your resources by returning to camp by choice rather than losing a run.

Retreat Strategically

When leaving a run, always return to the starting camp if possible to retain 100% of your gathered resources. However, if you cannot make it back to camp, quitting from any tile is better than losing the run. Hold down the Return button to prompt the game to quit automatically the next time you reach camp.

Learn Tile Synergies

Different tiles interact uniquely depending on their placement. For example, creating a 3x3 block of Rocks/Mountains will transform them into a Mountain Top, granting you extra resources and occasionally spawning Harpies on your field. Similarly, Meadows will transform into Blooming Meadows, providing additional healing when placed next to a non-meadow tile.

Build Your Camp

Use the resources you found in your past runs to create new buildings in your camp. Read through the available buildings and unlock them as early as possible to upgrade your camp and improve your chances of success.

Prioritize Resources

Buildings require specific resources to be built, so before starting an expedition, decide which buildings you want to create next and prioritize gathering those resources on your run. Knowing how to obtain resources using the cards in your deck will make this task easier.

Beware of Vampirism

While Vampirism provides a consistent source of health regen, it can backfire on Swamp tiles, causing damage instead of healing. However, this effect also applies to Vampire enemies, so placing a Vampire Mansion on a Swamp tile can be advantageous.

Use Your Treasury Wisely

Treasuries grant resources every time you place a tile in one of the eight squares surrounding it. Fill all eight spots to empty the treasury and gain a substantial amount of resources and new gear. However, this will also enable Gargoyles to spawn on the loop. Gear obtained from the treasury scales with the number of loops completed, so leaving an empty spot around it until later loops can maximize the quality of gear dropped.

Customize Your Deck -

Experiment with your deck layout and discover what cards work well together. As you play more, you will unlock new cards, so check your deck regularly to ensure the best possible setup.
