Luther season 5 ending explained
In the finale of season five of Luther, heart surgeon Jeremy Lake, the serial killer from the series, is finally apprehended for his crimes, along with his accomplice and wife, psychiatrist Vivien Lake. Luther and DS Halliday discover Jeremy in a home filled with his victims, and the episode ends with Luther handcuffing him to a radiator and leaving for the police to arrest him, effectively wrapping up that case introduced in season 5.
However, the episode is full of unexpected turns, with Alice Morgan appearing and killing Halliday out of jealousy, and then framing Luther for her murder. Alice then shoots Luther, confessing her love for him, but he manages to push her off some scaffolding just as she is about to shoot him again. Luther tries to save her, but she slices his hand and falls to her death. Shortly after, Luther is arrested.
Why did Luther get arrested in season 5?
In the last few minutes of Luther's season five finale, Schenk arrests Luther, which is believed to be the reason for his imprisonment in the movie set a few years after the show's events. During the final season, Luther is in a dispute with gangster George Cornelius, who hires hitman Mr. Palmer to kill Luther. Mr. Palmer takes Luther's friends Benny and Alice hostage as bait. Benny is shot by Mr. Palmer when he tries to describe the hitman's appearance to Luther, who later finds and confronts Mr. Palmer but does not shoot him. Instead, George ends up killing Mr. Palmer. Later, George shows Schenk a photo of Luther holding a gun to Mr. Palmer, suggesting that Luther killed Mr. Palmer and Benny. Schenk then orders Halliday to bring Luther into the station, and by the time of his arrest, Luther is suspected of Halliday's murder, Alice Morgan's murder, Benny Silver's murder, and Mr. Palmer's murder. Despite not committing any of these crimes, Luther's tendency to operate in the gray area as a detective has finally caught up with him.
