The show is based on the Danish series called "Gift Ved Første Blik," which premiered on September 4, 2013, on DR3. The format of the original Danish series has been sold to broadcasters worldwide.
In the United States, the series initially aired on FYI and later simulcasted on A&E starting from the second season. The show follows three to five couples who are matched by relationship experts and agree to marry when they first meet. In the first three seasons, the experts were Dr. Joseph Cilona, Dr. Logan Levkoff, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, and Greg Epstein.
From the fourth season onwards, the experts included Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Calvin Roberson (pastor and marriage counselor), and Rachel DeAlto (communication and relationship expert). Dr. Jessica Griffin replaced Rachel DeAlto in the sixth season, and Dr. Viviana Coles took over from the tenth season.
After getting married, the couples spend their wedding night in a hotel and then go on a honeymoon. Upon returning, they live together as a married couple for eight weeks. At the end of the experiment, they must decide whether to stay married or get a divorce.
The show was renewed for a fifth season by FYI on October 25, 2016, and starting from the fifth season, it moved to Lifetime. In subsequent years, two spinoffs were announced: "Married at First Sight: Honeymoon Island" and "Married at First Sight: Happily Ever After," which premiered in October of the following year.
