What is Mobile Banking?

Mobile banking is a financial service that enables customers to carry out financial transactions remotely using a mobile device, typically a smartphone or tablet. Unlike Internet banking, mobile banking uses a software application provided by the financial institution, commonly referred to as an app. This service is typically available 24/7, but some financial institutions may impose restrictions on account access and transaction amounts. Mobile banking requires an internet or data connection to the mobile device to function.

Typical features of mobile banking apps include obtaining account balances and transaction histories, electronic bill payments, remote check deposits, person-to-person payments, and funds transfers between accounts. Some apps also allow customers to download and print their statements. Using a mobile banking app enhances security by integrating with the mobile device's built-in security mechanisms, in addition to providing ease of use, speed, and flexibility.

From the bank's perspective, mobile banking helps to reduce the cost of transaction handling by reducing the need for customers to visit a physical bank branch for non-cash transactions. It's important to note that mobile banking does not handle cash transactions. Customers must still visit a bank branch or ATM for cash withdrawals and deposits.

While some mobile banking apps now have a remote deposit feature that allows users to digitally transmit cheques to their financial institution using their device's camera, mobile banking is distinct from mobile payments. Mobile payments involve using a mobile device to pay for goods or services at the point of sale or remotely, similar to using a debit or credit card for EFTPOS payments.

Mobile Banking BSI Error Berhari-Hari

Starting from Monday (8/5/2023) until Thursday (11/5/2023), the banking services of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) encountered a technical glitch, which has not been completely resolved yet. The issue arose due to a cyber attack on the BSI system. Initially, BSI customers were unable to conduct transactions through various channels such as BSI Mobile, ATM machines, and bank tellers.

BSI took measures to rectify the situation and as a result, ATM and branch office network services were restored on Tuesday (9/5/2023). However, the recovery process for BSI Mobile services is still ongoing. Nevertheless, the mobile banking service has started to become accessible to some customers gradually.

Despite efforts to restore the services, the BSI experienced prolonged disruptions and failed to fully recover. Finally, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises, Erick Thohir, acknowledged that the red-plate Islamic bank's services had been affected by a cyber attack. However, he did not provide specifics about the nature of the attack, only acknowledging that reports of disruptions had reached him. He also stated that he was closely monitoring the situation. In addition, BSI's CEO, Hery Gunardi, took immediate action to address the problem and work towards gradual recovery of the services.

"We convey that currently BSI is carrying out system maintenance so that it cannot be accessed temporarily and will return to normal conditions as soon as possible," wrote BSI management on the Instagram account.

"There was an attack, I'm not an expert, but what three points were mentioned, so they (BSI) were down for almost one day if I'm not mistaken," he said when met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in West Manggarai, Labuan Bajo.

History of Net Banking

In the early days of mobile banking, SMS banking was the main method used to perform financial transactions remotely. However, with the advent of smartphones with WAP support in 1999, the first European banks started to offer mobile banking via the mobile web. Before 2010, mobile banking was mainly performed via SMS or the mobile web. But the success of Apple's iPhone and the rapid growth of phones based on Google's Android operating system has led to the increasing use of special mobile apps that can be downloaded to the mobile device.

Web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript have also seen more banks launching mobile web-based services to complement native applications. Some mobile banking applications are comprised of a web application module in JSP such as J2EE and functions of another module J2ME.

A study conducted in May 2012 by Mapa Research revealed that over a third of banks had mobile device detection upon visiting the banks' main websites. Mobile detection can lead to various things, such as redirecting to an app store, redirecting to a mobile banking-specific website, or providing a menu of mobile banking options for the user to choose from. Mobile banking has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its ease of use, speed, flexibility, and improved security, as it integrates with the user's built-in mobile device security mechanisms.
