Monster Hunter

The Monster Hunter franchise is a popular series of fantasy-themed action role-playing video games developed and published by Capcom. Since the release of the first game on the PlayStation 2 in 2004, the series has expanded across various platforms including PCs, home consoles, portable consoles, and mobile devices. Players take on the role of a Hunter, tasked with slaying or trapping large monsters across various landscapes while completing quests and gathering resources. With multiplayer support for up to four players, the games feature a core gameplay loop where loot gained from monster hunts is used to craft improved weapons and armor to face even stronger foes.

By December 31, 2022, the Monster Hunter game series had sold 90 million units globally, making it Capcom's second best-selling series after Resident Evil. Initially, the games sold well in Japan and other Asian countries, primarily due to their ad hoc multiplayer features on portable consoles. Although the series was highly praised in the West, the steep learning curve kept sales low. However, with the release of Monster Hunter: World (2018), Capcom aimed to broaden the game's appeal by releasing it simultaneously worldwide on advanced home gaming consoles and computers. World became the best-selling Monster Hunter game within three days of release and, as of July 5, 2022, had sold 21 million units worldwide, with more than 70% of sales outside of Japan. Besides the games, the franchise has inspired an anime, a manga, and a feature film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. On August 12, 2021, Netflix released an animated film titled Legends of the Guild.

Monster Hunter Gameplay

The main feature that drives players to continue playing Monster Hunter is its compulsion loop, as outlined in. Unlike traditional RPGs, a player's Hunter does not have any intrinsic statistics or attributes that can be developed over time. Instead, Hunter's abilities are determined solely by the weapons and armor that they have equipped. Players can choose the most effective weapons, armor, and items for each mission, and if they are successful in completing it, they are rewarded with in-game currency ("zenny") and loot in the form of parts from the monster they defeated. These parts, along with other resources collected during missions, can be used to create new weapons and armor that are more powerful and can help the player tackle even more challenging missions, thus completing the compulsion loop.

To access more difficult missions, players need to increase their hunter rank, which is achieved by completing specific missions assigned by the quest giver. Mission rewards are often randomized, requiring players to grind the same monster multiple times to obtain the desired parts. Weapons and armor also have their own inherent strengths and weaknesses against different types of elemental or physical damage and can offer unique abilities that can be customized by mixing and matching different equipment pieces.

Monster Hunter offers a diverse selection of weapon classes, with the most recent titles boasting a total of fourteen classes including swords, hammers, and bows.[4] Each weapon class has a distinct set of combat maneuvers that cater to different play styles based on speed, damage, range, and the ability to apply buffs and debuffs to monsters and allies. Combat in Monster Hunter games utilizes an "animation priority" system, leaving players potentially vulnerable to attacks until the animation is complete.[6] Players must also manage their Hunter's health and stamina, with loss of health resulting in a retreat to a base camp and three retreats leading to mission failure. Combat actions consume stamina, which recovers quickly, but once depleted, the Hunter becomes vulnerable. Blights and other negative status effects inflicted by monsters or environmental hazards can impair combat abilities. Successful combat involves watching for monster cues, dodging and countering attacks, and finding opportunities to unleash attack combos based on Hunter's weapon.

In single-player mode, the Hunter is often accompanied by a Felyne or Palico that provides support and limited offensive abilities in combat. Cooperative online modes support up to four players to hunt stronger versions of monsters, though this feature is not available in older games. Monster Hunter games generally have a main quest line called "Low Rank" or "Village Quests," taking up to fifty hours to complete, followed by "High Rank" or "Gathering Hall" quests featuring stronger versions of previously encountered monsters and new foes, offering better components for more powerful weapons and armor sets. Completion of these quests provides hundreds of hours of potential gameplay beyond the main quest. Most titles also offer a third rank of difficulty ("G Rank" or "Master Rank") released after the base game, introducing new monsters, locations, weapons, and armor sets.
