New Edition is a famous American R&B/Pop group that started in 1978 in Boston, Massachusetts, thanks to Bobby Brown. They got their name from the idea of being a new version of the Jackson 5. In the 1980s, they became super popular and are seen as the original boy band, inspiring many others.
The group initially had Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant, who was the lead singer. Brown later left in 1985 for a successful solo career, and they continued as a foursome for a bit. Then, in 1987, they added Johnny Gill. They had big hits like "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "Mr. Telephone Man." Tresvant was the main singer for most songs. They went through changes over the years, with some members doing their own solo work.
In 1996, all six of them came back together to make a new album called "Home Again." But during their tour, Brown and Bivins left, causing the tour to be canceled. They've had reunions since then, mostly with the 1987-1990 lineup, but sometimes with Brown too. Their most recent performance was on December 31, 2022, and they were inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame on September 24, 2023.
