Microsoft Outlook users have been grumbling online about an issue with their junk filter since February 20, 2023. The users were flooded with spam that usually got redirected. However, it appears that the problem has been resolved. Earlier, Twitter users posted what appeared in their inboxes, for example, and it was full of patently obvious junk. The email addresses contained random numbers, fake security messages, and phishing attempts. According to in.mashable.com, it’s unclear what caused the issue or when it could be resolved.

How To Fix Outlook App Junk Filter Not Working?

1. Check Filter settings

You must check that your junk filter settings are configured correctly. For that, you could use the below steps:

  • Go to the "Settings" menu in Outlook and then select "View all Outlook settings."
  • Then choose "Junk email." From there, you can alter your filter settings and make sure that your filter is set to "Standard" or "Exclusive" mode.

2. Train Junk Filter

  • You could train the junk filter by simply marking emails as "not junk" or "junk," as appropriate.
  • This will ensure that the filter knows your preferences and improve its accuracy.

3. Clear Junk Folder

  • If your junk folder is full, it might prevent the junk filter from working correctly.
  • So, attempt clearing your junk folder and then verify it again to see if the filter is working properly.

4. Check Your Email Formatting

  • Once you have done this, you must ensure that your emails are properly formatted and do not contain any suspicious links or attachments.
  • If an email is spam, the junk filter might automatically send it to the junk folder.

5. Disable Any Third-party Email Filters

  • If you use any third-party email filters, then attempt disabling them to check if they interfere with Outlook’s junk filter.

6. Update Your Browser

  • If you access Outlook through a web browser, ensure that your browser is up-to-date.
  • Older versions of browsers might not be compatible with Outlook, which might trouble the junk filter.

Outlook Server Status

Microsoft Outlook is running well. There are currently no issues on the server side. Though many of the sources report issues with Microsoft Outlook, the official Twitter page of Microsoft Outlook has not announced anything about the issues or maintenance work. However, many Twitter users have previously reported that the Outlook junk filter was not working. But those issues are fixed right now. So, it’s clear that Outlook Server is up and running well currently.

Outlook App Junk Filter Not Working

The Outlook app junk filter, the not working problem was reported earlier, but now it has been cleared. You could easily change the level of junk email protection or automatically erase or delete junk email. Here are the steps to change the level of junk email protection. 

  • First, tap Home, and then choose Delete group. In that box, select Junk and then Junk E-mail Options.
  • Next, select the level of protection you desire. There are four options available. They are:

1) No Automatic Filtering: Though this turns off the automatic Junk Email Filter, the messages are assessed by using the domain names and email addresses in the Blocked Senders List.

Here, note that if you wish to switch off the Junk Email Filter, you need to remove or clear the names from the Junk Email Filter lists.

2) Low: If you don't get many junk messages or wish to filter only the messages that are obvious junk, then choose this option.

3) High: If you get more junk messages but don’t wish to restrict messages from senders on your safe lists, then choose this option. You need to occasionally check the Junk E-mail folder to ensure that a message you wish isn’t moved in error.

4) Safe Lists Only: Safe Lists Only is the most restrictive option. Any message that is not from someone on your Safe Senders List or is not on a mailing list on your Safe Recipients List is classified as junk.

You may tell Outlook to delete all doubtful junk messages rather than moving them to the Junk E-mail folder. For that, you could use the below steps:

  • First, in the Mail, tap "Home" and then "Junk." Then click on Junk E-mail Options.
  • Next, on the Options tab, verify the option "Permanently delete suspected junk email" rather than moving it to the Junk E-mail folder box.
