GENERAL UPDATES
Challenges Updates
Developer Comment: Our goal is to ensure every game played contributes to weekly challenge progress. With the progress carry-over change, when weekly challenges reset, all progress on incomplete challenges will be carried over into the next week. Completed challenges will still reset.
The change from winning games to completing games increases the required amount to complete, but the average number of games required for completion remains the same. For example, "Win 10 games" could take any number of games to complete—around 20 games on average—and "Complete 30 games. Wins grant double progress." takes between 15-30 games, also averaging around 20. While this increased number of games looks big and scary, the maximum number of games it takes is now capped, and the average remains the same.

Ranked Inactivity Changes
Players that did not play any matches during the previous competitive season will become Inactive. Inactive players do not have a visible Skill Tier and Division. Each role in Role Queue can become Inactive separately, while in Open Queue, a player only has one rank that can become Inactive. Once an Inactive player returns and achieves a Competitive Update after winning five games, their Skill Tier and Division will become visible again.

Improved how the matchmaker computes its initial skill estimation, aka "MMR,” for a player queuing for their first competitive game.
Overwatch 2 Game Play
Overwatch 2 is an evolving hero shooter that builds upon the success of its predecessor. The game revolves around team-based combat, where players choose from a diverse roster of 35 unique characters. These heroes are categorized into three classes: damage, support, and tank, each with their own distinct roles and abilities. With a focus on player versus player (PvP) gameplay, Overwatch 2 offers various modes and maps for both casual and ranked competitive matches.
In order to enhance the gameplay experience, Overwatch 2 introduced some significant changes compared to the original game. The team composition now consists of five players instead of six, with one less tank slot. This adjustment aims to increase the pace of matches and streamline gameplay mechanics. Maps have been redesigned to provide additional cover options to compensate for the reduced tank-based protection.
Additionally, damage heroes now have increased movement speed, support heroes slowly regenerate health, and tank heroes have been reimagined to fulfill a more offensive role. Visual updates to the heroes reflect the progression of time since the events of the first game. Furthermore, Overwatch 2 introduces a ping system to facilitate communication and coordination among teammates by directing attention to specific points on the map.
A notable addition to Overwatch 2 is the new PvP mode called "Push." This mode features a tug-of-war gameplay style, where teams compete to control a robot that pushes a payload to the opponent's side of the map. Push has become a part of the standard map rotation in the Overwatch League, replacing the Assault mode. Certain existing gameplay modes may be phased out in Overwatch 2 based on feedback from the community.
Some Assault maps, including Paris and Horizon Lunar Colony, are unlikely to be available in Overwatch 2 due to balance concerns. However, other Assault maps like Hanamura and Temple of Anubis may still be accessible through custom games or non-competitive arcade modes.
Overwatch 2 adopts a free-to-play model, departing from the premium monetization of its predecessor. The game no longer relies on loot boxes and instead implements a battle pass system tied to seasonal updates, introducing new maps and heroes. Cosmetic items can be purchased directly from an in-game store. Blizzard has committed to offering new heroes as rewards in the free tier of the battle pass. Players who do not reach the associated tier will have alternative means to obtain the hero for free in subsequent seasons.
Starting from Season 6, which began in August 2023, Overwatch 2 incorporates new player-versus-environment (PvE) story missions. These missions contribute to the game's expanding lore and narrative. They involve completing multiple objectives and resemble the short-term event missions previously featured in the first Overwatch. These PvE missions are available as free-to-play game modes during specific seasons, but Blizzard offers the option to purchase permanent access to these missions separately or as part of a battle pass bundle.
To play Overwatch 2, players need a Blizzard Battle.net account, regardless of their platform of choice. The game supports cross-progression, allowing in-game cosmetic items and progress to be shared seamlessly across PC and console versions. Cosmetic items, in-game currency, and player statistics from any linked Overwatch profile are merged and accessible on all platforms. However, competitive skill ratings remain separate, with ranks on console and PC being independent of each other.
Overwatch 2 Development
Overwatch 2 was announced at BlizzCon in November 2019. Initially, the plan was to maintain a "shared multiplayer environment" between Overwatch and Overwatch 2, allowing players from both games to compete in PvP modes while retaining their unlocked cosmetics and features. However, Overwatch 2 later transitioned into a free-to-play title, with live services from the original game being replaced by Overwatch 2's services.
The original Overwatch servers were shut down on October 2, 2022, two days before the release of Overwatch 2. Players kept their existing cosmetics and in-game currency, and any remaining loot boxes were automatically opened upon the release of Overwatch 2. The roster of heroes was expanded with the addition of Sojourn, Junker Queen, and Kiriko.
Overwatch 2 utilizes an upgraded version of the original game's engine, allowing for larger map sizes to support the new PvE elements. Visual redesigns were implemented for all existing heroes, although not every hero had their redesign completed at the time of the game's reveal. The game was released for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, in early access on October 4, 2022. Quality was prioritized over release timeliness, and the initial 2022 release window was delayed to provide the development teams with more time.
Blizzard expressed interest in merging Overwatch and Overwatch 2 into a single product to avoid engine differences affecting the player experience. They also considered supporting cross-platform progression and exploring the possibility of cross-platform play. Jeff Kaplan, the former director of Overwatch, left Blizzard in April 2021, and Aaron Keller took over as the lead developer. Geoff Goodman, the lead developer for new heroes, left in mid-2022.
Blizzard acknowledged that they had focused too much on Overwatch 2, leading to a lack of support for the original game. As a result, they changed their plans and decided to release Overwatch 2 in parts. The PvP portion entered beta form in April 2022, while the PvE part was delayed. Closed beta access was granted through signing up or watching select Twitch streamers.
