In school, McCollum learned to play the violin and later picked up the guitar at age thirteen. He started writing his own songs at the same age, blending Texas country, Americana, and indie rock influences. His older brother, Tyler, played a significant role in shaping his songwriting skills. Parker began performing at local open mic events with his guitar and even learned to play the harmonica at fifteen. By sixteen, he was booking gigs at local venues. After high school, he moved to Austin, Texas, where his journey in music and college began.
