Passing Movie Explained
Irene Redfield is a light-skinned dark woman who sometimes turns white in public when she sees a fit. Irene is a practical, determined person. She was born and raised in Chicago, but now lives in Harlem with her husband, Brian, and their two sons. Brian is a successful doctor, but he doesn't like his job. She would have preferred to move the whole family to another, less racist country long ago, but Irene always insisted that the family belonged in New York.
One day, returning to Chicago, Irene meets her childhood friend Clare. Clare is very different from Irene - self-absorbed, melodramatic and reckless. Clare is even lighter skinned than Irene and actually married a white man, John Bellew, without telling him she was black. They have a daughter. The Bellews live primarily in Europe, but often spend time in the United States, depending on where John Bellew's work in international banking takes him. Irene finds Clare strangely fascinating, but dislikes her company. He only hesitantly agrees to visit Clare in the Bellew’s hotel suite. Clare invited a light-skinned friend they have in common. When John Bellew arrives, Irene is shocked to learn that he is an extremist racist. He openly says that he hates black people, not knowing that he is talking to the three of them.
Two years later, the Bellews moved to New York. Clare contacts Ire again, and Irene is not sure enough to demand that Clare leave her alone, if only to protect Clare's secret. When Clare learns that Irene is planning a charity where upper class blacks and whites mix, Clare wants to attend. Soon he is a regular at the Redfields' home and has become part of their social circle. As time passes, Irene suspects that Clare and Brian are having an affair. The Bellews soon move back to Europe, but a chance encounter between John Bellew and Irene at the center when Irene is with a dark-skinned friend causes a crisis. After Bellew concludes that Clare, like Irene, is black, he can separate from Clare, leaving her free to pursue Brian. As Irene angrily moves towards Clare and places her hand on Clare's arm, Clare falls to her death from a nearby open window. The cause of his fall is unclear - whether he passed out and fell by accident and it is also possible that Irene pushed Clare, but no one blames her.
