When Patrick joined the Royal Air Force, he had his name changed from "Grady" to "O'Grady" due to a mistake on his paperwork, but he kept the new name. Patrick married Mary "Molly" Savage, who was born in England to Irish immigrants from County Louth. Paul was their third child. O'Grady was born more than a decade after his brother Brendan, who was born in 1941, and sister Sheila, who was born in 1944.
