Persona 3

Persona 3 is a video game made by Atlus in 2006. It's part of the Persona series and the bigger Megami Tensei franchise. It first came out in Japan for the PlayStation 2 in 2006 and later in North America in 2007. The game got different versions and ports, like Persona 3 FES with extra content, released in Japan in 2007 and worldwide in 2008.

There's also a shorter version for the PlayStation Portable called Persona 3 Portable, released in Japan in 2009, North America in 2010, and Europe in 2011. This version was then brought to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. A remake of the original game called Persona 3 Reload is set to come out in February 2024 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

In Persona 3, you play as a high school student in the "Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad" (SEES), a group investigating a weird time called the "Dark Hour." During this time, SEES can enter Tartarus, a big tower full of creatures called Shadows. SEES members fight these Shadows using a manifestation of their psyche called a Persona, which they summon by using a special thing called an "Evoker." Besides the role-playing parts, Persona 3 also has simulation elements. You go through each day in a school year, forming relationships that make your Personas stronger in battles.

People mostly liked Persona 3. Critics enjoyed the social parts, even though some thought the combat and places got a bit repetitive. Persona 3 FES added more story after the original game but got feedback for not having the simulation part. There are also other games that continue SEES' story, like Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Persona 3 has a lot of related stuff, like a rhythm game, soundtracks, concerts, radio dramas, a manga, an anime series, and a series of animated films.

Persona 3 Gameplay

Persona 3 is a game that mixes role-playing and simulation elements. In the game, you play as a high-school student dealing with daily life, going to school, and building relationships. But, during a mysterious time called the Dark Hour, you also fight evil beings called Shadows. Your days are split into daytime and evening. Besides scripted events, you choose how to spend your time each day, affecting your character's attributes: Academics, Charm, and Courage. In the evening, you can visit Tartarus, the main dungeon, to build your party's experience and items. On full moon days, there are boss battles to advance the story.

The game's main feature is Personas, creatures linked to Tarot cards. Each Persona has strengths, weaknesses, and different abilities. While other characters have their own Persona, the protagonist can use multiple Personas in battles. You can create new Personas by fusing existing ones. Social links are new to the series, representing bonds formed with characters, each related to a Tarot card. Spending time with them increases social link ranks, giving bonuses when creating Personas of that Tarot card. Negative actions can break or reverse social links.

Tartarus is the main dungeon, visited in the evening. Players explore, split up party members, and battle Shadows. Boss floors and story progression impact progress. Spending too much time in Tartarus can make characters Tired or Sick, affecting performance. Battles start when you touch a Shadow, using a turn-based system with physical and elemental attacks. Exploiting weaknesses lets characters knock down enemies, gaining extra turns. Winning battles earns experience points, leveling up Personas for better stats and abilities.
