Pokemon Sapphire Wiki

"Pokemon Sapphire Version" and "Pokémon Ruby Version" are a 2002 video game. The company Game Freak created them, and they were published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. They are the first ones in the third set of Pokemon games, often called the "advanced generation." Nintendo used to be the only company publishing Pokemon games worldwide, but this time, The Pokemon Company joined them in publishing the games.

They first came out in Japan at the end of 2002 and then in other countries in 2003. Two years later, a third version called Pokemon Emerald was released in all regions. In 2014, exactly twelve years after the first release of Ruby and Sapphire, remakes of the games were made for the Nintendo 3DS. These were called Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and were released worldwide in November, except for Europe, where it was a week later.

The way you play the game is almost the same as the previous games. You control the main character and see the game from above. The controls are also very similar. Like before, you have to catch all the Pokemon and defeat the Elite Four. In these games, there's a story about you stopping a criminal group trying to take over the region.

Some new things were added, like double battles, abilities for Pokemon, Pokemon Contests, and 135 new Pokemon. Because the Game Boy Advance was more powerful, now four players could connect at the same time instead of just two. You could also connect the games to an e-reader or other Pokemon games from that time.

Most people liked Ruby and Sapphire. They liked the new features and the new Pokemon. But some people had different opinions about the games, especially about the gameplay and how they looked. Some said the gameplay didn't change enough compared to the older games. Some also had issues connecting the games with other devices or older Pokemon games. Even with this, the games were a big success and sold over 16.22 million copies.

Pokemon Sapphire Gameplay

The core gameplay mechanics in Sapphire closely resemble their predecessors. Similar to all Pokémon handheld games, the gameplay is viewed from a third-person, overhead perspective, involving three main screens: the field map for navigation, the battle screen, and the menu for party management, item usage, and game settings. At the beginning of the game, players start with one Pokémon and can capture more using Poké Balls.

These captured Pokémon can be used for battles against other Pokémon. When encountering a wild Pokémon or engaging in a trainer battle, the game transitions to a turn-based battle screen.

In battles, players have several options like using moves, items, switching Pokémon, or attempting to flee (except in trainer battles). Each Pokémon has hit points (HP), and when a Pokémon's HP drops to zero, it faints and can't battle unless revived. When a player's Pokémon defeats the opponent's Pokémon, it gains experience points. Upon accumulating enough experience points, a Pokémon levels up and may evolve into a new species.

Capturing Pokémon is a vital aspect of the gameplay, and players use Poké Balls during battles with wild Pokémon to capture them. The success rate of capture depends on factors like HP, status effects, and the strength of the Poké Ball used. Trainers cannot capture other trainers' Pokémon.

Pokemon Sapphire Plot

In Pokémon Sapphire, the story unfolds in the Hoenn region, a place different from the earlier Kanto and Johto regions. Hoenn's design was inspired by the Japanese island Kyushu but with a 90° rotation for better gameplay balance. Similar to Kyushu, Hoenn has many islands and extensive sea routes where players can dive underwater.

In the game, you play as Brendan or May, new residents of Littleroot Town. At the start, you choose Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip to protect Professor Birch from an attacking Poochyena. After this, you receive your chosen Pokémon as a starter. Your main goals are defeating Gym Leaders, challenging the Elite Four, becoming the Champion, and completing the Pokédex by capturing and evolving Pokémon.

The story involves battling the villainous teams, Team Aqua and Team Magma, who aim to use legendary Pokémon to alter Hoenn's climate. Along the way, you'll also help NPCs with tasks and meet characters like Wally, a young boy aspiring to become a Pokémon trainer.
