Pokemon Snap
Pokémon Snap, released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, is a first-person photography game with rail shooter mechanics. Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, it is a spin-off game in the Pokémon series and one of the first console-based games featuring Pokémon in real-time 3D.
The game allows players to control Todd Snap, the protagonist, as he travels on a predetermined path and takes pictures of Pokémon using an in-game camera. Originally planned for the Nintendo 64DD, Pokémon Snap was later moved to the Nintendo 64 due to delays. In the game, players use items like apples and "pester balls" to interact with Pokémon and capture better photos.
After each round, the player's photos are judged based on their quality. The Nintendo 64 cartridge allowed players to print their in-game pictures on stickers at participating stores. The Virtual Console version on the Wii allowed players to send photos to the Wii Message Board. Pokémon Snap received significant promotion from Nintendo and sold 1.5 million copies by the end of 1999.
It was well-received by critics, praised for its addictive gameplay and innovative concept. It has been compared to other games with photography elements, such as Afrika, Dead Rising, and Beyond Good & Evil. The game's success led to the release of a sequel titled "New Pokémon Snap" in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch.
