The 24-year-old Summer Myomick and her son, 1-year-old Clyde Ongtowasruk, made it beyond the front of the Kingikmiut School in Wales, Alaska, and then a polar bear appeared from the snowstorm and mauled them Tuesday. It was the first deadly polar bear attack in 30 years in Alaska.

“There’s absolutely discussion now in Wales, saying, ‘Hey, maybe things have changed to the point that we need this, and how do we do that?’” said the chief administrator of the Bering Strait School District Susan Nedza.

As the news about the attack spread, the principal ordered a lockdown and then closed the blinds so the kids couldn't see what was happening outside. Many community members and employees left the safety of the building and did everything to scare away the bear.

The mauling stopped temporarily, and the animal turned on them, and they rushed inside. The Principal slammed the door in the face of the bear, saving lives, according to Susan Nedza.

Susan said, "The polar bear was chasing them and tried to get in as well. Just horrific. ... Something you never think you would ever experience."

There was no law enforcement in Wales and when the bear was still outside, a call went out to community members for aid. A person showed up with a gun and then killed the bear as it continued to maul Summer Myomick and Clyde Ongtowasruk.

It seems the mother and son were clueless about what was coming due to low visibility, Austin McDaniel, Alaska State Troopers spokesperson, told The Associated Press on Thursday.

It's unknown what prompted the attack. But, polar bears see people as prey, said the senior director of conservation at Polar Bear International Geoff York.

The post said, "We ask that you respect their privacy in this period of immense grief."

A memorial service was set to be held in Wales, and after that a funeral service in St. Michael, according to the post.

The Anchorage Daily News reported that the last polar bear attack in Alaska happened in 1990, and biologists said the animal showed signs of starvation.
