Run, a 2020 American psychological horror thriller movie, is directed by Aneesh Chaganty and written by Chaganty and Sev Ohanian. The film features Kiera Allen, who plays the role of Chloe Sherman, a homeschooled teenager with a disability. Chloe begins to suspect that her mother, Diane (played by Sarah Paulson), is hiding a dark secret about her past. The movie was announced in June 2018, with Sarah Paulson cast in October of that year, followed by Kiera Allen in December. Principal photography took place during this time in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with filming primarily taking place on location. Run is connected to other movies by Chaganty and Ohanian, including Missing (2023). On November 20, 2020, Run was released in the United States via streaming on Hulu. The movie "Run" tells the story of Diane and her daughter Chloe. Diane appears to be a loving and caring mother who has dedicated her life to taking care of her daughter, who has a number of medical conditions that require constant attention. However, as the movie progresses, it becomes clear that there is more to Diane's behavior than meets the eye. The first hint that something is amiss comes when Chloe discovers that her mother has been hiding her mail from her, preventing her from finding out about college acceptance letters and other important information. Chloe also begins to notice that her mother is giving her pills that are meant for dogs, and starts to question whether her mother is actually helping or hurting her. Things come to a head when Chloe demands to know the truth about her medical condition and Diane reveals that she has been intentionally keeping her sick and dependent on her. Chloe is horrified and attempts to leave, but Diane stops her and a physical altercation ensues. The police are called and Diane is taken to the hospital, where she falls down a flight of stairs and is left incapacitated.
The movie then fast-forwards seven years, and we see Chloe visiting her mother in a correctional facility. It is revealed that Chloe is the one who has been keeping Diane incapacitated all these years, by continuing to give her the same pills that Diane had been giving her. Chloe explains that she has a rich life now, with a husband, children, and a job, but it is clear that she is still deeply traumatized by her mother's actions. In interviews, the movie's stars, Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen, offer insights into their characters' motivations. Paulson explains that Diane was a victim of abuse and neglect by her own mother, and that she was trying to give Chloe the care and attention that she never received as a child. However, she took it too far and became obsessed with controlling Chloe's life. Run Plot Explained
The story begins with Diane Sherman giving birth to her daughter, Chloe, prematurely. Chloe was born with several medical conditions, including arrhythmia, hemochromatosis, asthma, and diabetes, as well as partial paralysis, which requires her to use a wheelchair. Chloe is homeschooled by her mother and relies heavily on medication to manage her condition. One day, Chloe finds a prescription bottle of green pills with Diane's name on it. However, she later discovers that the label has been pasted over with her own name. Chloe tries to look up the medication, but the house has no internet connection, and Diane is seen sitting in the dark next to an unplugged router. Chloe dials a random number and asks the answering stranger to look up the medication, and she finds out that it is a relaxant for dogs called Ridocaine. Chloe begins to hyperventilate, realizing that her mother may be administering medication to impair her ability to walk.
Chloe attempts to leave the house to get help but is sedated by Diane. When Chloe wakes up, she finds herself locked in her room, and her wheelchair ramp has been cut. She manages to crawl to her mother's bedroom and breaks the window with a soldering iron and water. Chloe has an asthma attack but manages to retrieve her inhaler. Chloe tries to go downstairs using her automated wheelchair ramp, but she discovers that Diane has cut the power cord. She throws her wheelchair down the stairs and accidentally falls, sustaining minor injuries, but she discovers that she can move one of her toes, which she couldn't do before. Chloe sees a mail truck outside and rushes to stop it. She explains her situation to Tom, the postal worker, who agrees to help. Diane appears and stabs Tom with a sedative syringe. Chloe blacks out and wakes up in the basement of her house, with her wheelchair chained to a steel pole.
Run Plot Summary
Chloe discovers childhood photos of herself walking and a death certificate for a girl named Chloe who died two hours after her birth, as well as an article about a couple who had their baby stolen from the same hospital. Diane enters, and Chloe accuses her of deliberately making her sick. Diane insists that she only wanted to help and protect Chloe. When Chloe accuses Diane of poisoning her, Diane fills a syringe with paint thinner, saying it will make her forget. Chloe crawls away and locks herself in a closet. Fearing for her life, but realizing that Diane won't let her die, Chloe swallows the contents of a bottle of organophosphate, forcing Diane to rush her to a hospital. Chloe wakes up in a hospital bed, intubated and barely able to move. Diane insists that Chloe be discharged, but the doctors refuse until she has been evaluated by a mental health professional. Chloe signals to a nurse, who brings her crayon and paper. While Chloe is attempting to write "MOM" on the paper, a code blue is called, and the nurse rushes out. Diane sneaks in and ties Chloe to a wheelchair to escape. As Diane panics, Chloe is able to move her foot and hold the chair in place. Diane is shot in the arm by security guards, causing her to fall down the stairs. Seven years later, Chloe visits Diane in a correctional facility, and although she still relies on her wheelchair, she can walk short distances with the use of a cane. Chloe takes out three plastic-wrapped Ridocaine pills she hid under her tongue and tells Diane that she still loves her before asking her to open her mouth wide.
