A decade has elapsed since the conclusion of Bakumatsu, a turbulent era marked by a citizen uprising against the oppressive Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries aspired to establish a peaceful and prosperous nation, liberated from tyranny.
While the new Meiji era has dawned, true peace remains elusive. Swords may be forbidden, yet streets still witness senseless killings. War veterans' orphaned children find themselves abandoned, without a place to call home, while a corrupt government prioritizes personal gain.
Amidst this backdrop, a wandering samurai named Kenshin Himura perseveres, determined to ensure that the ideals he fought for were not in vain. Once feared as Hitokiri Battousai, the most ruthless killer among the revolutionaries, Kenshin is now burdened by guilt and has vowed to never take another life.
He seeks redemption and knows that true tranquility will elude him until violence becomes a relic of the past. In the 11th year of the Meiji era, Kenshin chance upon Kaoru Kamiya, the proprietor and chief instructor of a modest dojo facing imminent closure.
Her establishment is targeted by a self-proclaimed Battousai, who commits a series of murders in its name. The local police prove inept in halting the bloodshed. Kenshin temporarily suspends his wanderings and joins forces with Kaoru to clear their names and uncover the truth.
