When Jwarasura's actions intensified, people began falling ill in large numbers, and the disease he unleashed proved untreatable by medication. In desperation, people turned to the High Priestess, Shakti, for help, and she emerged as Sheetala Mata, the protector of her followers. Sheetala Mata purified the water and surroundings and defeated Jwarasura, turning him into a donkey. Jwarasura then repented for his behavior and became her devotee. Many people in India pray to Sheetla Mata for her ability to cure various illnesses, including chickenpox.
