Vani Jayaram's husband predeceased her and she had no kids, the singer's household assistant stated. According to PTI, the singer's housemaid informed the reporters that she turned up as normal for work on Saturday. Vani Jayaram was born as Kalaivani in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, India on November 30, 1945, to her parents Duraisamy and Padmavathi. Vani was born in a Tamil lineage of classically trained musicians as the fifth daughter in a family of six daughters and three sons. Her Parents were acquainted with Ranga Ramunaja Iyengar and enlisted her in his classes where he trained her in a few Muthuswami Dikshitar kritis. Later she was given a traditional Carnatic practicum under the direction of Kadalur Srinivas Iyengar, R. S. Mani, and T. R. Balasubramanian. Vani got married to Jayaram and rolled into a family which supported music. Her mother-in-law Padma Swaminathan was a prominent Carnatic singer and a social activist. Later, she shifted to Mumbai and retained vocal arrangements including Ghazal and Bhajan.
