The debut episode of Skip and Loafer begins with Mitsumi Iwakura, the protagonist, conversing with her friend Fumi. We learn that Iwakura is a fifteen-year-old girl from a secluded village on the outskirts of Ishikawa Prefecture. Iwakura prepares for her first day of high school in Tokyo, and her guardian Nao drops her off at the railway station. As Iwakura is visiting Tokyo for the first time, Nao seems concerned about her well-being. However, Iwakura plans for a great day and boards the train while reminiscing about her dream.
Mitsumi's ambition is to attend Tokyo University, graduate in law, work for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and eventually become the mayor of her hometown. She plans to study hard for three years to achieve her goal. Her parents are concerned about other things, like whether she has made any friends. As Mitsumi boards the train, the story shifts to another character, Sousuke, who is talking to a friend. His friend informs him that the entrance ceremony has already started, and he thinks he should go home. However, he notices Mitsumi at the station, wearing the same uniform as him. Mitsumi remembers being lost on the train and having no idea how to get to school.
Sousuke is kind and decides to help Mitsumi get to school. They board the train and arrive at the station, but Sousuke tells Mitsumi that the school is 10 minutes away, and they should start running. As they run, Sousuke seems impressed by Mitsumi. Eventually, they arrive at school, and Mitsumi delivers her entrance ceremony speech. After the ceremony, Mitsumi feels that her first day was a failure because it did not go as planned. In class, everyone is getting to know one another, but no one is talking to her. Sousuke enters the class, chats with Mitsumi, and gets her number. Another female, Mika Egashira, also asks for her number.
