Frictional Games created and released the survival horror video game, Soma. on PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, and Linux on September 22, 2015, and Xbox One on December 1, 2017. The setting of Soma is an undersea remote research facility with technology that mimics human traits like awareness. A fish-out-of-water protagonist named Simon Jarrett ends up there through inexplicable circumstances and sets out to learn about its past while attempting to make sense of his current situation and possible future.

Soma Gameplay

The gameplay of Soma expands on the norms established in Frictional Games' earlier horror games, with a focus on stealthy evasion of hazards, puzzle-solving, and immersion. But breaking with tradition, it also downplays elements like inventory management in lieu of a sharper narrative focus. Critics gave Soma largely positive reviews, praising its voice acting and story while criticizing its encounters and opponent design. A first-person first-scare survival horror video game called Soma.

Numerous animals that each represent a different part of the game's themes will be encountered by the player. The player will discover a wide variety of hints throughout Soma, including notes and audio tapes, which enhance the mood and advance the plot. Like in most Frictional Games games, the player advances by solving puzzles, exploring, and using stealth; if they fail to avoid monsters, they will perish;

However, two years after the game's initial release, a "Safe Mode" has been added that keeps the monsters but prevents them from killing the player. A "walking simulator" has been used to describe this kind of gaming.

Soma Walkthrough

Here's a step-by-step walkthrough for the game SOMA, a first-person survival horror game developed by Frictional Games:

Introduction

The game starts with the player controlling Simon Jarrett, the main protagonist, who finds himself in a mysterious underwater research facility called PATHOS-II. Follow the on-screen prompts to learn the basic controls, including moving, interacting with objects, and crouching.

Explore the Environment

Begin by exploring the immediate surroundings and interacting with objects to gather information about the facility and its inhabitants. Pay close attention to audio logs, documents, and computer terminals to uncover the story and progress the gameplay.

Interact with NPCs

Along the way, you will encounter various non-playable characters (NPCs) and interact with them through dialogue or actions. Some NPCs may provide clues or assistance, while others may pose threats or obstacles.

Solve Puzzles

SOMA features several puzzles that you need to solve to progress. These puzzles may involve manipulating objects, deciphering codes, or finding hidden paths. Explore the environment thoroughly, examine objects, and use your wits to overcome these challenges.

Avoid Enemies

PATHOS-II is filled with hostile creatures, known as "robots" or "WAU-corrupted" entities, that roam the halls. Avoid direct confrontation as much as possible, as Simon is not equipped to fight back. Sneak past them, hide in the shadows, and use your environment to your advantage.

Use the Omnitool

Simon's Omnitool is a multifunctional device that allows you to interact with various terminals and devices throughout the facility. Use it to unlock doors, hack security systems, and access important information.

Make Choices

SOMA is a narrative-driven game with branching paths and multiple endings. Your choices and actions throughout the game will affect the outcome of the story. Pay attention to the moral and ethical dilemmas presented to you and make choices that align with your desired outcome.

Follow the Story

As you progress, you will uncover the dark and mysterious story of PATHOS-II, its inhabitants, and the experiments that have taken place. Listen to audio logs, read documents, and interact with NPCs to piece together the narrative and understand the truth behind the facility.

Explore Underwater Environments

In addition to the research facility, you will also venture into underwater environments using a diving suit. These sections involve navigating through dark and treacherous underwater areas, avoiding hazards, and solving puzzles to progress.

Confront the Climax

As you near the end of the game, you will face challenging situations and make critical decisions that will determine the ultimate fate of Simon and the inhabitants of PATHOS-II. Choose wisely and prepare for an emotional and thought-provoking climax.

Remember to save your progress frequently and pay attention to your surroundings to uncover clues and hints. SOMA is known for its immersive storytelling, atmospheric environments, and thought-provoking themes, so take your time to fully experience the game and its narrative.

Soma Tips and Tricks

Exploration is the main component of SOMA. While some of the explorations are fully optional and offer additional background and information, some exploration is necessary for the main plot. To access new places, items must be located or tasks must be finished. Moving things around will allow SOMA to change things from playthrough to playthrough. With the Xbox One version of the game, safe mode was added. Monsters are still there, but they won't chase you.

If you approach too close, though, they will still attack. Be careful since they might trap you in a corner and murder you if that happens. They won't disturb you too much, for the most part. If you decide to complete the game in Normal mode, be aware that stealth will be essential in a number of areas. Keep listening to make sure there are no nearby monsters because some regions are where they freely roam. You'll be able to see whether they're getting closer by the visual distortion on the screen.

You'll have to crouch down in the shadows, put out your torch, and for some of the monsters, you'll have to look aside in order to avoid them. Keep in mind that any noises you make, particularly loud footsteps and door openings, will draw their attention to where you are.
