Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard is a television series created for the streaming service CBS All Access (later rebranded as Paramount+). The series was created by Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman,  Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman. It is the eighth Star Trek series and debuts in 2020 as part of Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Picard features the retired Starfleet admiral Jean-Luc Picard, starting 20 years after his last appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). Every season explores various aspects of the character in his old age.

Star Trek Picard Season 3 Episode 6 Review

The final season of Picard is undoubtedly the most outstanding of the three, with the nostalgic Next Generation reunions contributing to its success. Nonetheless, there is one issue we have with this season, and ironically, it stems from the only reunion that is not heartwarming but heartbreaking.

In episode six, Worf and Raffi finally come aboard the USS Titan and join in on the fun after a long gap of eleven years, five months, and four days since Worf last met Jean-Luc. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows, and we are not just referring to the Changeling threat that looms on the horizon.

While the Next Gen crew is thrilled to see each other again, Raffi and Seven of Nine's interactions are slightly awkward. Even Worf notices the awkwardness of going into battle with one's ex, as he comments on "Saffi" in episode six of Picard's final season. However, the show circles around the reason behind their breakup without providing a clear answer, leaving fans to fill in the gaps.

This handling of Raffi and Seven's relationship is pretty typical for the show in general. Season one ended with a sudden display of affection, but season two confirmed their relationship and then neglected to give it proper attention as the plot became more complex. Even when their relationship took the lead, it was barely acknowledged.

While Star Trek isn't known for its romantic relationships, the missed opportunity here could be seen as worse than having no LGBTQ+ representation at all. Picard's team may not have intentionally omitted the end of Saffi's relationship to appease bigoted viewers, but the show's history with queer representation isn't the strongest.

Seven of Nine actress Jeri Ryan acknowledged the breakup as a realistic progression of their storyline, given their independence as characters, especially for Seven. However, the love they shared could have made a significant difference to LGBTQ+ fans if the show had handled it better.

Star Trek Picard Season 3 Episode 6 Ending Explained

Beverly, who is always fascinated by science, is intrigued by Data's human-like appearance and the fact that he appears to have aged at a somewhat normal rate, unlike previous versions. After Geordi fixes a few minor issues with Data, Picard wastes no time in asking him about the weapon that was stolen from Daystrom, which is said to be deadlier than any other. Data begins to respond but only repeats the name "Jean-Luc Picard" several times, which raises concerns that he may be malfunctioning. However, it turns out that he is not malfunctioning, and he ultimately reveals what was taken from Daystrom: Jean-Luc Picard's body.

Meanwhile, back at Daystrom, Riker is being interrogated by the Changelings, who are brutally trying to extract information from him. In an unexpected turn of events, one of the Changelings kills the other two, revealing herself to be Vadic. She takes Riker with her onto the Shrike, where she reveals that she has taken someone else hostage: Deanna Troi, whom Riker deeply cares for.

Star Trek Picard Season 3 Episode 6 Recap

This episode is filled with fan service, especially at Daystrom Station naming. The station seems like a toy store for Section 31 and a museum for fans, with Riker, Worf, and Raffi passing by the Genesis Device, Tribbles, and even a skeleton of James Kirk, leaving much room for possibilities. The appearance of the holographic crow is a nod to Data's dreams in the "Next Generation" episode "Birthright," while bringing back Professor Moriarty as part of the AI guarding the station is a clever addition. It's also noteworthy how Riker's perfect pitch is used to discern Moriarty's purpose.

Moreover, the Fleet Museum ships, including the Defiant, Enterprise-A, Voyager, and the Klingon Bird of Prey from "Star Trek: The Voyage Home," add to the fanservice. There's also a touching moment where Jack acknowledges the need for connection, revealing a different side to his character.

The reunion scenes featuring Worf, Geordi, Beverly, Jean-Luc, and Riker are heartwarming, with decades of onscreen chemistry shining through. The theme of parental concerns is prominent in this season, as Worf immediately makes the mission about protecting both Starfleet and Jack, while Geordi initially declines to participate to protect his own children. It's interesting to note that Worf references a "Deep Space Nine" storyline, where Starfleet almost wiped out the changelings during the Dominion War, leading to radicalization among some of them, despite eventually finding a cure, thanks to Dr. Bashir.
