The Strays

"The Strays" is an upcoming British horror thriller film released in 2023. It marks the directorial debut of Nathaniel Martello-White, who also wrote the screenplay. The story revolves around Neve, portrayed by Ashley Madekwe, a woman of mixed race belonging to the upper class.

Neve leads a seemingly perfect life alongside her family, enjoying the privileges of being a socialite in her community and holding the position of deputy headmistress at a prestigious private school. However, her carefully constructed world is thrown into chaos when her troubled past resurfaces, threatening to undermine everything she has worked so hard to achieve.

The Strays Ending Explained

In the climactic scene, the tension reaches its peak during an intense game of Scrabble between Carl and Ian. After a few minutes of heated gameplay, Carl's frustration boils over, and he angrily throws the board into the air, exclaiming, "I'm bored!" Unbeknownst to them, the living room floor has been flooded due to running water, adding a noir-ish element to the chaotic scene. Carl storms towards the kitchen, grabs a machete along the way, and confronts Ian with a question about his strength, using the British term "How many KGs (kilograms) are you pushing?" This essentially translates to asking how much weight Ian can bench press.

With the machete still in hand, the two of them head to the weight room. Meanwhile, Neve attends to a delivery person at the front door. Upon her return to the house to give the delivery person a tip, she witnesses Ian struggling under the immense weight that Carl has placed on the bench press. Ian's strength gives out, causing the weight to crash down on his throat, instantly crushing his windpipe and leading to his untimely demise.

The Strays Plot

The story follows Cheryl, an African American woman residing in an undisclosed location in England. She shares her concerns about facing discrimination and financial hardships with her sister over the phone. In subsequent scenes, Cheryl ignores calls from her spouse and leaves a note on the fridge indicating her plans to visit the hair salon.

Several years later, we are introduced to Neve, a fair-skinned black woman who is married to Ian, a white man. They have two biracial children named Sebastian and Mary. Neve appears to have a disdainful attitude towards anything associated with her racial identity. She works as a deputy headmistress at her children's school and is organizing a fundraising gala at her home. Neve frequently experiences unsettling visions of black individuals, which disturbs her deeply. During the gala, Neve confronts two black strangers who unexpectedly address her as their mother.

Through a series of flashbacks set five days earlier, the focus shifts to "Carl and Dione," the two black individuals Neve has been seeing. Carl adopts the alias "Marvin" and secures a job as a school janitor, while Dione takes on the name "Abigail" and becomes Ian's assistant at the office. They befriend Neve's children, with Dione inviting Mary to their hotel room for a party and Carl enticing Sebastian to join him for a smoke after his basketball game. Carl then convinces Sebastian to violently confront his school bully.

In the present day, it is revealed that Neve is actually Cheryl, and Carl and Dione are her biological children. Cheryl meets them at a diner and gives each of them ten thousand pounds to help them restart their lives in London. However, Carl and Dione break into Cheryl's house. Carl confiscates everyone's phones and submerges them in the sink, causing the living room to flood. Carl and Dione insist on celebrating Dione's birthday as a family and force the family to order food through Uber Eats.

A confrontation arises when Carl discovers Cheryl's attempt to pay them off, unbeknownst to the rest of the family. Ian threatens divorce, but Dione intervenes and suggests playing a board game. Cheryl, visibly distressed, vomits. Soon after, she assumes a new, seemingly happy persona, and the group starts playing Scrabble. Carl becomes irritated and abruptly ends the game before demanding that Ian accompany him to the family's gym. There, Carl coerces Ian into lifting increasingly heavy weights until he can no longer bear the load, resulting in his apparent death.

Meanwhile, as the Uber Eats driver arrives, Cheryl informs the group that she will tip the driver and leave, but she never returns. The driver's engine starts, and the car drives away, implying that Cheryl has left with the driver. Mary and Sebastian are left in the flooded living room with Dione and Carl, as Cheryl has now abandoned her second set of children.
