The Invitation 2015 Ending Explained

In a 2016 interview with Film Inquiry, Director Karyn Kusama discussed the ending of the film "The Invitation," particularly focusing on the final shot and the realization that the events depicted were not isolated incidents. According to Kusama, Los Angeles was the perfect setting for this movie. She highlighted the city's reputation as a place where people come to reinvent themselves and their identities, creating an environment that allows for various fringe elements and belief systems.

This setting enabled the film to portray characters who would engage in the actions seen throughout the story. While the ending of "The Invitation" may have appeared horrifying, Kusama expressed a sense of satisfaction with the conclusion. The protagonist, Will, grappled with inner pain and grief throughout the entire film. In the end, he resists succumbing to the pressure of his friends and instead chooses to continue living, refusing to let grief consume his life.

Kusama emphasized that this ending may not be conventionally happy, but it was a preferred outcome compared to a more feel-good ending. The film aimed to explore the extremities of what Will had to endure in order to reaffirm his will to live.

The Invitation 2015 Plot

Will drives his girlfriend, Kira, to his ex-wife Eden's house in the Hollywood Hills for a dinner party hosted by Eden and her new husband, David. The guests include their friends Tommy, Miguel, Ben, Claire, and Gina, as well as Sadie, a girl Eden and David met in Mexico. Throughout the evening, Will reminisces about his past and witnesses unsettling incidents, such as Eden's suicide attempt and her slapping Ben.

The atmosphere grows increasingly strange as David locks the front door due to a recent home invasion in the neighborhood. Eden and David reveal that they have joined a group called "The Invitation," which helps people cope with grief. They show a video where the group's leader, Dr. Joseph, comforts a dying woman. The guests participate in a game called "I Want," during which secrets are revealed, including Pruitt confessing to killing his wife.

Will becomes suspicious and questions David's intentions. Later, he sees Sadie behaving strangely and rejecting her inappropriate advances. Will confides in Tommy about his unease, but Tommy reassures him. Will discovers a message on a laptop from Dr. Joseph, suggesting something ominous. As David and Eden prepare a toast, Will smashes the glasses, fearing they are poisoned.

Chaos erupts when Sadie attacks Will, who unintentionally knocks her unconscious. Gina collapses and dies, presumed to have been poisoned. David, Pruitt, and a recovered Sadie launch a violent attack on the guests, resulting in the deaths of Miguel, Choi, and Ben. Will, Kira, and Tommy manage to escape and hide in the house.

Will overhears David and Eden discussing their belief that they have been chosen and that completing their mission is the only way to escape their pain. Tommy kills Sadie in self-defense with a fireplace poker. Pruitt attacks Will and Kira, but Kira defeats him by smashing a wine bottle. Eden shoots Will, injuring him, before remorsefully shooting herself.

David, armed with a knife, hunts the survivors but is ultimately killed by Tommy. The wounded Eden requests to be taken outside, where they witness chaos unfolding in Los Angeles as other cult members carry out their plans.
