The Last Of Us Season 1 Episode 7 Explained

In this episode of The Last of Us, viewers are transported to a time before Ellie met Joel, where she was a regular teenager attempting to find happiness in a world of misery. Ellie and her friend-turned-crush, Riley, spend their time engaging in activities like sneaking alcohol, exploring an abandoned mall, and jumping over rooftops, all of which are reminiscent of the game. The use of vivid imagery creates a dreamy ambiance that's difficult to resist. The episode's music is expertly employed, with popular songs strategically utilized to indicate danger or brief moments of happiness in a bleak environment. For those familiar with the game, A-ha's Take On Me has special meaning, while The Cure's Just Like Heaven alludes to Ellie as a source of healing in the midst of chaos. Etta James's 1960s song I Got You, Babe is a poignant reminder of the void left in Ellie's heart following Riley's departure.

The loss of Riley illustrates the similarities between Joel's and Ellie's journeys. Both have been motivated by past losses to avoid losing each other. In the present, Ellie's care for Joel extends beyond healing his physical wounds also to include healing past wounds. This tender moment exemplifies how their relationship has grown stronger over time. This episode of The Last of Us is a showcase of Bella Ramsey's exceptional acting abilities and provides viewers with a deeper understanding of Ellie's motivations in the present. It serves as a reminder that even in a world full of hopelessness, moments of joy and love can still exist.

The Last Of Us Episode 7 Review And Recap

The Last Of Us Episode Review: Although the Left Behind DLC adaptation for Ellie's story is appreciated, it highlights one of the biggest problems with the pacing of the show. The lack of Infected action and suspenseful moments, with only one appearance of Clickers, one Bloater cameo, and rare instances of Infected throughout the seven episodes, is a hindrance. The Walking Dead, for instance, balanced its drama with zombie action, which this show lacks. While the game masterfully blended action, drama, and themes, the show feels disjointed, with two filler episodes that could be removed without losing anything.

While episode 3 was excellent with plenty to like, episode 7 has very little substance to it beyond Ellie and Riley discussing the Fireflies. Compared to other shows in the post-apocalyptic genre, The Last Of Us would not make it to the top 5. The remaining episodes' quality is uncertain, and we must wait and see if they will deliver a satisfying conclusion.
