The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

Nintendo developed and published an action-adventure game named The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS. It was released in different regions in late 2013. The game takes place many years after the events of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System game, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Players control a young adventurer named Link, who embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Zelda and the Seven Sages from the evil sorcerer Yuga, who seeks to resurrect the demon king Ganon by using their power.

Development began in 2009, and the game's unique wall-merging mechanic was prototyped during this phase. However, development was halted in late 2010 due to team member reassignments. It restarted a year later and entered full production in 2012. The game's world and setting were based on A Link to the Past, with many areas significantly reworked. The game's designers aimed to rethink established series conventions, resulting in changes such as the game introducing an item rental system and allowing players to complete dungeons in almost any sequence.

A Link Between Worlds received critical acclaim for its engaging gameplay, new features, and nostalgic feeling. It sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide in its first five months and over 4.21 million copies worldwide by 2020. In addition, the game was nominated for and won several awards.

 A Link Between Worlds Wiki

The game "The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds" is a follow-up to the highly acclaimed game "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" that was released in 1991. Originally announced as "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2," the game's official name was revealed as "A Link Between Worlds" during the E3 2013 Nintendo Direct.

Set many generations after the events of "A Link to the Past," the game takes place in the same world and features a similar Hyrule, but with a focus on height and depth to fully utilize the 3D features of the Nintendo 3DS. One of Link's new abilities in the game is the ability to transform himself into a painting and move along walls.

Other features added to the game include:

  • The ability to StreetPass and battle against shadow versions of other players' Link, with Rupees as rewards and achievements.
  • The option to tackle many of the game's dungeons in any order, with only specific items needed to enter each one.
  • The introduction of a new character, Ravio, who rents and sells items like the Hookshot and Bow.
  • A rental system for items, which means that if Link falls in battle, any rented items are returned to Ravio and must be rented again.
  • An interactive map on the second screen that allows players to zoom in, place pins, and change their color to track collectibles such as Heart Pieces and Maiamais.
  • A total of twelve dungeons in the game, with four in Hyrule and eight in Lorule.

"A Link Between Worlds" has received critical acclaim and has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide within its first five months of release. It has been praised for its engaging gameplay, new features, nostalgic feeling, and soundtrack, although the art style received mixed reviews. The game has also received multiple awards and nominations

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Gameplay

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is an action-adventure game with stereoscopic 3D polygonal graphics. The game is played from a top-down perspective, and players control a young boy named Link, The protagonist of the game sets out on a mission to save the Seven Sages and defeat Yuga, the main enemy. The game takes place in two kingdoms, Hyrule and Lorule, which have a non-linear structure and a similar layout, but differ in style and tone.

A Link Between Worlds is similar in many aspects to its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The game's worlds of Hyrule and Lorule are analogous to A Link to the Past's depiction of Hyrule and the Dark World, and a number of items, enemies, and audio tracks featured in A Link to the Past return in A Link Between Worlds.

The Nintendo 3DS's top screen presents various displays including hearts, an energy gauge, and an action icon. When enemies hit Link, his life energy decreases, and collecting hearts replenishes it. The energy gauge manages item and ability usage, which depletes on use and restores over time. The action icon informs players of interactive objects. The 3DS's bottom screen shows a map of the kingdoms, displaying Link's current position and marked locations. Additionally, it allows players to view and select Link's gear and items.

Both friendly and enemy non-player characters exist in both kingdoms. Friendly characters may offer Link assistance or side quests to complete. Link can use his sword and shield to defeat enemies and deflect their attacks. Other combat items from previous Zelda games, such as the bow, fire rod, and bombs, also make a return in the game.

Obtaining Items

Unlike previous games, the methods for obtaining and using these items are different. Instead of discovering them in dungeons, items are rented or bought from merchant Ravio. If Link passes away, his rented items are returned to Ravio. Ammunition is not required for these items; their use is instead constrained by a shared energy gauge. Heart pieces may be collected to increase Link's overall life energy. A long-term side quest that involves finding hidden creatures and returning them to their parent can be completed to upgrade his weapons. Link can also participate in minigames to earn Hyrule's main currency, rupees.

Puzzles and Dungeons

As with many previous The Legend of Zelda games, solving puzzles and clearing dungeons is a fundamental part of gameplay. A Link Between Worlds features a more open-ended progression than its predecessors, allowing players to tackle many dungeons in any order they choose. However, some obstacles in the dungeons will require the use of rented or purchased items. At the end of each dungeon, Link will face a boss that he must defeat. One of the game's unique mechanics is Link's ability to merge onto walls and move horizontally along them.

Play Coin and StreetPass

The game uses the 3DS's Play Coin and StreetPass systems. In A Link Between Worlds, players can use Play Coins to receive advice from Hint Ghosts located at certain spots. Through StreetPass, a shadow version of the Link from another player's game can appear on the field as an AI opponent. By defeating these Shadow Links, players can earn rupee rewards based on their difficulty level and achieve special conditions. After completing the main adventure, players can unlock the more difficult "Hero Mode," where they take four times the damage and hearts no longer spawn from defeated enemies.
