The Ones Below Ending Explained
The twist at the end of the film, revealing that the baby was not actually thrown into the river, raises questions about why a massive search was not launched earlier to find the missing child. It seems illogical that nobody had gone in search of the baby and discovered that it was never actually in the river.
Towards the end of the film, Kate asks Justin to move to a new flat, and they find a suitable place. However, their plans get disrupted when Justin is called in for an emergency meeting after handing Kate a bottle of milk, which she drinks regularly.
He leaves for work, instructing Kate to call the moving van for the next day. Justin later receives an email from Kate apologizing, and when he rushes back home, he finds her dead in the bathtub. Kate reportedly committed suicide after throwing the baby into a nearby canal. Devastated, Justin moves out, and Jon and Theresa follow suit.
However, in a flashback scene, it is revealed that Jon and Theresa had drugged Kate using the milk Justin had given her before he left. Jon had also sent the email to Justin from Kate's laptop, and Theresa, dressed in Kate's clothes, threw a bundle that looked like a swaddled baby into the canal. In a later scene, it is implied that the bundle was, in fact, Kate and Justin's cat. The film ends with Jon and Theresa settling into their new home in Germany with their baby, Peter.
The Ones Below Plot
The movie revolves around two couples, Kate and Justin, and their new neighbors, Jon and Theresa, who are both expecting their first child. During a dinner party, it is revealed that Kate and Justin conceived quickly, while Jon and Theresa struggled for seven years. After dinner, Theresa falls down the stairs and loses her baby, which causes a rift between the couple. Jon and Theresa leave, only to return later seemingly in good spirits.
Theresa offers to babysit Billy, Kate, and Justin's newborn, while Kate visits her brother's grave. However, when Kate returns, Theresa and Billy are missing. The couple is shown with Billy in public, but Kate becomes increasingly suspicious of their behavior.
She sneaks into their flat and finds pictures of Billy, a fully furnished nursery, and a photo of Jon and Theresa holding a baby, presumably Billy. When she shows Justin, they confront Jon and Theresa, but the evidence has been removed.
The movie takes a dramatic turn when the final twist is revealed: Jon and Theresa drugged Kate, faked the drowning of their cat as Billy, and left Kate to drown in the bath, before stealing Billy. In the final scene, Jon and Theresa are shown in their new home in Germany with "Peter," their stolen baby.
