The Rig Wiki

"The Rig" is a supernatural thriller television series created by David Macpherson for Amazon Prime Video. Directed by John Strickland, it is the first Amazon Original to be filmed entirely in Scotland. The series was released on 6 January 2023, consisting of six episodes, and was renewed for a second season in February 2023. The story revolves around a Scottish oil rig in the North Sea that becomes engulfed in an unnatural fog that cuts them off from outside communications. Spores in the fog cause infected crew members to experience behavioral changes. A scientist on the rig suspects that an ancient parasite has been unleashed from the ocean floor, after examining the spores.

David Macpherson first came up with the idea for the series in 2018, based on the stories his father told him about working in the oil and gas industry. He sent a one-page pitch to producer Derek Wax and began writing it in December 2018. In November 2020, it was announced that Amazon had greenlit "The Rig." The series is written and created by David Macpherson, directed and executive produced by John Strickland and produced by Suzanne Reid. Derek Wax's company, Wild Mercury Productions, produces the show. "On 22 February 2023, Amazon renewed the series for a second season."

What is "The Rig"?

The Rig Ending Explained

"The Rig" is a sci-fi television series that aired on Amazon Prime Video. Season 1’s finale left many questions unanswered as the threats to the crew of Kinloch Bravo grew. Baz’s inability to stop the rig from working led to the final Ancestor ring being completed, ultimately resulting in a mega-tsunami triggered by the crumbling seabed. Although the season started slow, the finale delivered one twist after the other, with not enough explanations for the plot twists and events. While the existence of the Ancestor was initially unnamed, it is later discovered, and it kick-started life-altering events throughout Earth's history. The Ancestor has been on Earth for millions of years, and it encouraged life, facilitated the growth of plants, and protected life and nature.

The show's early character development loses some of its focus as the mystery and peril intensify in episodes 2 and 3. The slower pace of the central plot doesn't quite live up to the promise of the first episode, which was more purposeful and driven. The question remains whether the series can maintain its base-under-siege storyline and environmental mystery for the full six hours. With only three episodes available for review, it's difficult to say for certain.

The Ending Of The Rig Season 1 Explained

"The Rig" is a thriller, sci-fi, and supernatural mystery series that follows a crew of rig workers who become stranded on a remote Scottish coastline thanks to a harmful fog. The microbial lifeform known as the Ancestor is wreaking havoc on Kinloch Bravo, throwing their future into jeopardy. The show has the ability to uniquely straddle different genres while providing edge-of-your-seat action, and the cast offers effortless representation. The final episode of Season 1 leaves many questions unanswered, with plenty to mull over while fans wait for news on Season 2.

However, the current trajectory suggests that the story has been stretched too thin. The mystery, while initially intriguing, starts to feel relatively simplistic by the end of episode 3, with many viewers likely having predicted the outcome from the show's trailer. One of the show's strengths is it's ecological messaging, which follows the James Cameron/Avatar approach of entertaining first and informing second. Unlike Cameron's film, which is set in a different time and space, The Rig is firmly grounded in the present day, with characters engaging in literal discussions about the oil industry's impact on the planet versus its economic importance for workers and their families.

The Rig Review

"The Rig" is a unique television show that is difficult to categorize. It can be viewed as a character-driven mystery thriller, a show about the industry with a strong environmental theme, or an epic series that is full of action. The story is set around a Scottish oil rig in the North Sea that is engulfed in an unnatural fog, which cuts them off from outside communication. The show offers a blend of different genres and provides edge-of-the-seat action that has been widely appreciated by its audience. The final episode of Season 1 leaves many questions unanswered, but the show has been renewed for a second season.
