The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, a collaborative effort by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo, brings a fresh take on the iconic video game franchise. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a script by Matthew Fogel, the film boasts a star-studded voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen.

Set as an origin story, it follows Italian-American plumbers Mario and Luigi thrust into a conflict between the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser's Koopas in an alternate world. Triggered by the previous Super Mario Bros. film's failure in 1993, Nintendo hesitated to license its properties for movies until Shigeru Miyamoto's interest sparked during Virtual Console development.

Partnering with Illumination and Universal in 2018, the movie premiered in April 2023, achieving global success with a $1.36 billion box office, breaking records and marking Illumination's highest-grossing production.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Is Coming to Netflix in December

Starting December 3, Netflix subscribers can enjoy the Super Mario Bros. Movie, the year's second-highest-grossing film, right from their living rooms. Previously exclusive to Peacock since August, the shift broadens access to Netflix's vast user base of around 74 million paying members in the US, offering more value for their subscription bucks.

Praised for its safe yet enjoyable Mushroom Kingdom adventure, the film features Jack Black's memorable portrayal of Bowser, with Chris Pratt earning positive remarks as Mario. A cautionary note: the catchy "Peaches" song might linger in your head.

Despite its success, a sequel announcement is still pending from Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination. Meanwhile, Nintendo's partnership with Sony Pictures for a live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation adds an intriguing twist to the evolving realm of video game-inspired movies.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Plot

Italian-American brothers Mario and Luigi, new owners of a Brooklyn plumbing business, face disdain from their former boss Spike and disapproval from their father. While fixing a water main leak, they're sucked into a Warp Pipe, landing in different realms. Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach, while Luigi faces the Dark Lands under Bowser's rule.

Bowser plans to marry Peach, threatening the Mushroom Kingdom with a Super Star. Imprisoned Luigi becomes leverage. Mario allies with Peach and Kongs, defeating Donkey Kong for their help. Ambushed on Rainbow Road, Mario and Donkey Kong plummet to the ocean.

Peach evacuates, but Bowser proposes to her. Mario and Donkey Kong crash the wedding, freeze Bowser, and save the day. Transported to Brooklyn, they defeat Bowser, and Brooklyn hails them as heroes. Mario and Luigi, now celebrated, move to the Mushroom Kingdom for more plumbing adventures.
