The Zone of Interest Plot
In 1943, Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, enjoyed a seemingly idyllic life next to the camp with his wife, Hedwig, and their children. Despite the constant reminder of suffering beyond their garden wall, Höss focuses on family outings and garden care while servants handle chores.
Upon his promotion to deputy inspector, Höss reluctantly leaves for Berlin, leaving behind a distraught Hedwig. Her mother, horrified by the camp's proximity, leaves abruptly. Meanwhile, a Polish girl secretly aids prisoners by hiding food.
Höss returns to Auschwitz to oversee a mass extermination operation, feeling numb to the horrors. After a party, he confesses to Hedwig his sinister thoughts. As he leaves his Berlin office, he retches, symbolizing his inner turmoil. The film ends with him descending into darkness, reflecting on his monstrous actions.

The Zone of Interest Review
In "The Zone of Interest," Jonathan Glazer's adaptation of Martin Amis's novel, the film delves into the unsettling contrast between domestic bliss and the horrors of the Holocaust. Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, leads a serene family life with his wife, Hedwig, and children, oblivious to the atrocities beyond their idyllic home.
The film depicts their detachment as screams and gunshots echo from the nearby camp, while Höss's disturbing interaction with a female prisoner hints at his depravity. Despite the haunting beauty of the cinematography, which captures Auschwitz against a vivid sky, ethical questions arise about the aestheticization of historical tragedy.
Although the inclusion of Jewish testimony adds depth, the modern-day Auschwitz museum scene prompts reflection on the film's portrayal of evil and its aftermath. "The Zone of Interest" challenges viewers to confront the banality of evil within the context of familial tranquility, leaving a profound and unsettling impression.
