On August 26, 2022, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released it in theaters in the US, while Roadshow Entertainment released it on September 1 in Australia.

Three Thousand Years of Longing Ending Explained

We see that Alithea asked Djinn to travel with her to London at the conclusion of "Three Thousand Years of Longing." She wanted to experience his unmatched love, as Zefir and Sheba once had. Although getting her goal, she soon realized she couldn't retain him in this world. She observed Djinn battling his miserable state. She was aware that she had to release him. She gained knowledge from the Djinn's errors, who once prevented Zefir from granting her third desire so that he might remain with her. Alithea was determined not to repeat that error.

Being able to let someone go is the most important aspect of true love. Once more, she wished for Djinn to return to his land, where he belonged and could flourish. Alithea had been without Djinn for three months, and she was able to function without him. But unlike her fictional companion Enzo, neither she nor he abandoned him. This in and of itself was proof that Alithea had discovered a way to restrain her imagination at some point.

She still felt the desire to immerse herself in her make-believe world, but she had figured out how to strike a balance so that it didn't alter her perception of reality. Enzo, according to her, was an emanation of absence. She recorded all of her fantasies in a journal out of fear that one day her imaginary buddy would desert her. There was a catch, though. She was unable to combine her imagination with reality. She started to question her abilities, and in the end, she decided to burn all she had written about him. But things were different this time. She was able to merge her imagination with reality and live in a region that was somewhere between them.

Perhaps this is what led the Djinn to continue paying her occasional visits whenever he could. Although Alithea had not forgotten her losses or moved on, she had mastered the art of accepting life as it was. When she saw the innocence of a kid, a loving relationship between two people, or anything else she had been denied in her life, she still felt empty. Yet, she didn't flee from it this time. She mainly remained alone and continued to love her own company, but she was content. Alithea continued to live in her own imaginary world, but this time she didn't do it to escape reality but rather to appreciate its wonders.

Three Thousand Years of Longing Plot

Dr. Alithea Binnie meets a djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom while she is in Istanbul for a conference. This poses two issues: first, she questions his veracity; and second, as an expert in mythology and story, she is aware of all the cautionary tales of wishes gone awry. The djinn makes his case by regaling her with amazing tales from his earlier life. She eventually succumbs to the charm and surprises them both with her wish.

In the very conclusion of Three Thousand Years of Longing, Alithea expresses still another wish that the Djinn she has grown to love going back to his home, "wherever that may be." The Djinn eventually gives in after first refusing to leave her side in London. Three years later, Alithea published Three Thousand Years of Longing, a book that describes the Djinn's histories and interactions. The Djinn did go from London, but the movie's conclusion makes it clear that he still occasionally visits Alithea as a true friend.

Three Thousand Years of Longing Ending Explained - FAQs

1. What happens at the end of Three Thousand Years of Longing?

At the conclusion of the three tales, Alithea expresses a wish: that she falls in love with the Djinn and that he feels the same way about her so that she may experience such longing and passion. It has a fascinating premise, one that is made better by Swinton and Elba's superb acting.

2. Does 3000 years of longing have a happy ending?

Alithea grants the djinn's last two wishes, which frees him, but because of the djinn's unique physiology, he is incompatible with the wavelengths of modern technology and gradually starts to die. As he returns to her from the djinn's realm to visit, the two eventually reunite, as the movie ends.

3. What is the message of Three Thousand Years of Longing?

In Three Thousand Years of Longing, the author explores how stories can help people feel more connected and less alone. The narratives we hear from others, those we tell ourselves, and those we share with others.

4. Was the Djinn real in Three Thousand Years of Longing?

The Djinn might not be real, which is the subtle twist in Three Thousand Years of Longing. The final act of the movie subtly establishes that Alithea made up the Djinn tales for a book when numerous of her sources of inspiration show up in her basement.

5. Why did Three Thousand Years of Longing fail?

The same issues that plagued Late Night may have affected Three Thousand Years of Longing, which opted for a "big bang" wide distribution on almost 2,000 screens instead of a word-of-mouth "platform" launch for a film that wasn't right for the formula.
