On July 8, 2020, CBS debuted the first episode of the American reality competition program Tough as Nails. Phil Keoghan serves as the show's host, and each episode of the competition-style program sees one competitor being eliminated as the result of obstacles they face on construction sites. The show will return in March 2022 for a fifth season. CBS had a 10-episode order for Tough as Nails, it was revealed on October 3, 2019. Along with his wife Louise, Phil Keoghan acts as the show's executive producer and host, according to reports from Parade. A nationwide casting call was conducted in the cities of St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Cincinnati, and Las Vegas in the beginning of November. On April 29, 2020, it was revealed that the series would debut on July 8, 2020, later expanding the premiere to two hours.

Twelve competitors compete in events at real-world job sites with objectives that assess their physical toughness, endurance, life skills, and mental fortitude. Participants engage in 6-on-6 team challenges, solo contests, and "Overtime" elimination matches. Contestants that lose elimination tasks do not forfeit the game, unlike previous reality contests, and they can still participate in team competitions to gain additional rewards. Every team competition awards the victorious team with $12,000 ($2,000 each member), as well as the Badge of Honor. A further financial prize of $60,000 ($10,000 each member) is awarded to the team with the most Badges of Honor at the conclusion of the season, according to reports from Parade. In the event that both teams have the same amount of Badges of Honor, a tiebreaker will be used. To remain in the running for the top prize, contestants must complete individual challenges in each episode.
