Warframe

Warframe is a free game where you play as members of the Tenno, ancient warriors who woke up in the future and are now in a big war in space. The game was made by Digital Extremes and first came out in 2013 on computers, later on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can play it with friends no matter what device they use because they added cross-platform play in 2022 and cross-platform save in 2024.

In Warframe, you control your Tenno using cool suits called Warframes and all sorts of weapons to complete missions. Some missions have levels that change every time you play, and there are also big open world areas like other online games. You can play against computer enemies or other players. The game is free, but you can buy things with real money if you want, though you can also earn them by playing the game. Warframe started as an idea in 2000 and was part of another game called Dark Sector, but it turned into its own game in 2012. At first, not many people played it, but now it's a big success with almost 50 million players.

Warframe Gameplay

Warframe is a free-to-play action game where players control powerful beings called Tenno, initially operating a biomechanical combat unit known as a 'Warframe.' Starting with basic weapons and an AI-powered spaceship called the 'Orbiter,' players explore the Origin System. As the game progresses, players unlock direct control of the 'Operator,' the true Tenno protagonist, gaining unique abilities. The Operator can further transform into a mechanical combat unit called 'Necramech' and engage in space combat using 'Archwing.'

The game features diverse missions with objectives like defeating enemies, stealth operations, rescues, and defense scenarios. Players can play solo or cooperatively with up to four players, navigating randomly generated maps using parkour moves. Missions yield rewards, in-game currency, and items, enhancing equipment and abilities. The game's cooperative nature extends to player versus player content in the 'Conclave.'

Players advance and level up their Warframes and weapons, utilizing 'Mods' to customize attributes and gain new abilities. Equipment blueprints, construction resources, and mods are acquired through missions, with some rare items available through in-game currency or microtransactions. Warframe is designed to be non-pay-to-win, allowing players to acquire equipment through gameplay, while spending in-game currency or premium currency can expedite progress or unlock cosmetic items.

Warframe Development

Warframe's roots trace back to Digital Extremes' initial vision for their previous game, Dark Sector. Before Warframe, Digital Extremes primarily worked as a support studio, collaborating with Epic Games on projects like Unreal Tournament. The proposed merger with Epic fell through due to Canadian government complications, leading Digital Extremes to pursue their own path.

In an effort to establish themselves as a lead studio, Digital Extremes introduced Dark Sector in 2000. Initially described as an amalgamation of Unreal Tournament's action with the expansive character evolution of a persistent online universe, the game underwent multiple transformations over the years. Despite re-announcing Dark Sector in 2004 with a new direction, inspired by the Metal Gear Solid series and artist Jean Giraud, securing a publisher proved challenging. Publishers suggested various setting changes, from World War II to the superhero genre, leading to compromises in the game's vision.

Ultimately released in 2008, Dark Sector deviated significantly from its original concept, receiving mixed reviews and limited financial success. Digital Extremes resumed work-for-hire projects, including contributions to BioShock, BioShock 2, Homefront, and The Darkness 2, before steering Warframe towards its own unique identity.
