Who Is Warren Jeffs?

Warren Jeffs is a former American religious leader who was the head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a breakaway Mormon polyggynous sect. Jeffs gained notoriety for his practices of arranged marriages between underage girls and older men, and for his authoritarian control over the FLDS community. In 2006, he was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List for charges of sexual assault of minors and arranging illegal marriages. Jeffs was arrested in 2006 and was sentenced to life plus twenty years in prison in 2011, after being found guilty of two counts of child sexual assault.

Since his incarceration, Jeffs has continued to exert significant control over the FLDS community, communicating with his followers through letters and dictating commandments from prison. He is considered by many FLDS members to be a prophet and a messiah figure.

Warren Jeffs Release Date

Warren Jeffs is serving a life sentence plus 20 years for his convictions of sexual assault of minors. He was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. He received an additional 20-year sentence for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl, who was married to him at the time. According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Jeffs will not be eligible for parole until 2038 when he will be 82 years old. Several additional cases of abuse have been made against Jeffs, including allegations by his nephew and his own children.

Elissa Wall, who appeared in the Netflix documentary, also brought legal action against Warren Jeffs. She claimed that Jeffs forced her to marry her 19-year-old first cousin when she was only 14 years old. In 2005, Jeffs was charged with conspiracy to commit sexual misconduct with a minor. Wall alleges that her cousin repeatedly raped her during their marriage, resulting in multiple miscarriages. In 2019, another woman filed a lawsuit against Jeffs, accusing him of sexually abusing her as a child. Jeffs's attorney filed a petition in July of that year, claiming that Jeffs had experienced a "mental breakdown" and was "not mentally competent to provide admissible testimony."
