College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff (CFP) is a yearly football tournament in the United States to decide the national champion for college football's top tier, called the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Four teams compete in two semi-final matches, and the winners face off in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

It all began in 2014, and the first champions were Ohio State. Since then, Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia have been the big names in the playoffs. A committee of 13 people selects and ranks the four teams in the CFP. This is different from the old system that used polls and computer rankings. The two semi-final games happen in one of six major bowl games, known as the New Year's Six. Besides the playoff teams, these rankings also help decide which teams play in the other four New Year's Six bowls.

The championship game's location is chosen through bids from cities, similar to the Super Bowl. The winner gets the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy. This playoff system was the first to use a bracket competition to determine the champion, as the NCAA didn't officially award a national championship for FBS football. And in 2024, the College Football Playoff will grow to include twelve teams.
