The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch in 2023. Serving as the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017), Tears of the Kingdom builds upon its predecessor's foundation, retaining the vast open world of Hyrule while introducing expanded vertical exploration. Players assume the role of Link, tasked with aiding Princess Zelda in her quest to prevent Ganondorf from bringing ruin upon Hyrule.

The concept for Tears of the Kingdom emerged when the ideas for downloadable content (DLC) for Breath of the Wild exceeded the scope originally envisioned.

Development of the game was spearheaded by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) division, with Hidemaro Fujibayashi returning as director and Eiji Aonuma as producer.

A teaser trailer was unveiled at E3 2019, followed by a full reveal at E3 2021. Despite an initial planned release in 2022, the game was delayed and eventually launched in May 2023.

It received widespread acclaim for its enhancements, expanded open world, and its encouragement of exploration and experimentation. Tears of the Kingdom quickly gained popularity, selling over 10 million copies within the first three days of its release.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay

Tears of the Kingdom maintains the open-world action-adventure gameplay found in its predecessor, Breath of the Wild (2017). Players take on the role of Link as they embark on an exploration of Hyrule, including two new regions: the Sky Islands and the Depths. Their objective is to discover weapons, gather resources, and complete various quests. Link can traverse the vast landscapes by foot, climbing, horse riding, or utilizing paragliders.

Introducing new elements to the game, Tears of the Kingdom features Zonai devices that serve multiple purposes such as combat, propulsion, and exploration. The familiar runes from the previous game have been replaced by five new powers: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall, and Autobuild.

Ultrahand enables players to manipulate and combine different objects, creating various vehicles and structures in conjunction with the Zonai devices. Fuse allows Link to enhance the attributes and durability of his shield or weapon by combining materials, equipment, or certain objects found in the world.

Autobuild enables the instant recreation of a previously crafted device at the expense of zonate, a valuable resource. Ascend grants Link the ability to move vertically through solid surfaces, while Recall allows for the rewinding of an object's movement.

The game includes the return of Shrines and Korok Seeds. Upon clearing a Shrine, players are rewarded with a Light of Blessing. Collecting four of these Lights allows Link to increase his heart capacity by one or expand the size of his stamina wheel. Korok Seeds, on the other hand, can be utilized to expand Link's inventory, enabling him to carry a greater number of melee weapons, shields, and bows.

Within the Depths, accessed through chasms on the surface, a new peril awaits Gloom, a viscous substance. Whenever Link encounters enemies covered in Gloom or is attacked by them, his maximum number of hearts temporarily decreases by one. Only by returning to the Surface or seeking out Lightroots, large light-emitting plants found in the Depths, can Link restore his maximum health and recover from the effects of Gloom.
