At around 8.45 a.m., a fire broke out at Alex Easton's parents' home in the Dellmount Park neighborhood. A spokesperson said they were both treated for injuries but died on the spot.
A PSNI Superintendent said: "This sad news will come as a huge shock to the local community, and An investigation is underway to find the cause of the fire and our sheriffs have been in the area conducting inquiries. Tributes have been paid to Easton's parents and condolences have also been extended to the politician and his family."

Alex Easton MLA is a Northern Ireland Independent Unionist politician who has served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for North Down since 2003. Easton, a former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) member, left the party in July 2021 due to disagreements over the party's leadership. He attended Gransha Boys High School as well as Bangor Technical College. He worked as a clerical officer in the Newtownards A&E department and then at the Ulster Hospital. What Party Was Alex Easton Part Of?
He was elected to North Down Borough Council as a member of the Democratic Unionist Party in 2001 and left in December 2013. Sir Jeffrey Donaldson paid tribute to his former colleague and offered his condolences.
“I have spoken to Alex earlier today and expressed my sympathies to him at this time of unimaginable grief and to assure him of our prayerful support," Sir Jeffrey said.
"The thoughts of everyone within the DUP are with him and the wider family as they struggle to take in this enormous loss."
DUP councilor Wesley Irvine works in the same office and is a good friend of Mr. Easton and said he could not believe the news when he heard it this morning. "My heartfelt and deepest sympathy go out to the family at this time - any support we can give them we will do that," he told Belfast Live.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey, issued a statement following the tragic news.
"On behalf of myself and the Assembly, I want to express my sympathies to Alex Easton and his family circle following the tragic death of Alex’s parents. Words are simply insufficient in the aftermath of a heart-breaking loss such as this. I know that many Members and staff in the Assembly community at Parliament Buildings have been shocked by the news and have the Easton family in their thoughts.”
