Byrnes' journey with Limerick began at the minor level in 2012, though the season concluded with a loss to Clare in the Munster Championship semi-final.

Later, he progressed to the Limerick under-21 hurling team and made his debut on 4 June 2014. Unfortunately, he received two yellow cards and was subsequently sent off in a disappointing 2-20 to 1-14 defeat against Clare.

In the following season, Byrnes' fortunes turned as he secured a Munster Championship medal with the under-21 team after a hard-fought 0-22 to 0-19 victory against Clare in the final. On 12 September 2015, he played as right wing-back in the All-Ireland final, where Limerick triumphed over Wexford with a scoreline of 0-26 to 1-07.
