University
During his time studying at Limerick Institute of Technology, Byrnes had the privilege of being selected for the college's senior hurling team to compete in the prestigious Fitzgibbon Cup.
Club
From a young age, Byrnes became a member of the Patrickswell club, actively participating in all levels of play from juvenile to underage competitions.
On 23 October 2016, Byrnes showcased his skills from the center-back position and contributed six points to secure a Limerick Hurling Championship medal for Patrickswell. The team triumphed with an impressive scoreline of 1-26 to 1-07 against Ballybrown in the final.
Returning to the Limerick Championship final on 6 October 2019, Byrnes played as the center-back once again and scored two points, one of which was an impressive long-range free. This outstanding performance earned him another winners' medal as Patrickswell emerged victorious with a score of 1-17 to 0-15 against Na Piarsaigh.

Byrnes' journey with Limerick began at the minor level in 2012, though the season concluded with a loss to Clare in the Munster Championship semi-final.
Later, he progressed to the Limerick under-21 hurling team and made his debut on 4 June 2014. Unfortunately, he received two yellow cards and was subsequently sent off in a disappointing 2-20 to 1-14 defeat against Clare.
In the following season, Byrnes' fortunes turned as he secured a Munster Championship medal with the under-21 team after a hard-fought 0-22 to 0-19 victory against Clare in the final. On 12 September 2015, he played as right wing-back in the All-Ireland final, where Limerick triumphed over Wexford with a scoreline of 0-26 to 1-07. Byrnes' outstanding performances throughout the season earned him a spot on the prestigious Bord Gáis Energy Team of the Year.
Senior
On 13 February 2016, Byrnes marked his debut for the Limerick senior hurling team during the National Hurling League, where they achieved a convincing 2-23 to 0-15 victory against Wexford. Later that season, he made his championship debut but faced a 3-12 to 1-16 defeat at the hands of Tipperary in the Munster Championship.
In April 2017, Byrnes suffered a setback as a knee injury forced him to miss the championship matches.
On 19 August 2018, Byrnes made a significant impact, scoring a point from right wing-back as Limerick secured their first All-Ireland title in 45 years, prevailing with a thrilling 3-16 to 2-18 victory over Galway in the final. His impressive performances earned him a spot on The Sunday Game Team of the Year, and he was also nominated for an All-Star Award at the end of the season.
During the National League final against Waterford at Croke Park on 31 March 2019, Byrnes played at left wing-back and contributed to Limerick's success, earning a winners' medal after their 1-24 to 0-19 triumph. On 30 June 2019, he displayed his prowess from right wing-back, scoring three long-range frees, and secured a Munster Championship medal as Limerick emerged victorious with a score of 2-26 to 2-14 against Tipperary in the final.
