Kyle Smaine is an American-based freestyle skier who was born on June 27, 1991. He won the gold medal in the snowboarding world championships in 2015. Skier Kyle Smaine, a world champion in the halfpipe, died over the weekend after being buried in an avalanche in central Japan.
The 31-year-old American's passing was announced on social media by the U.S. Freeski team. Smaine, a resident of Lake Tahoe, California, recently announced on social media that he was traveling to Japan to ski in the Nagano prefecture's backcountry in order to take advantage of the "unbelievable snow quality."
On January 29, 2023, Smaine and an Austrian skier perished in an avalanche on Mount Norikura in the Hida Mountains' northern region close to the Tsugaike Ski Resort in Otari, Nagano, Japan. Smaine was 31 years old.

The sources claim that Adam U., a professional American skier, and Grant Gunderson, a photographer for Mountain Gazette, were among the people Kyle Smaine traveled with. According to the Gunderson account, it was their last run of the trip's final day, and they were just having fun. He continued, saying that when the avalanche was started from above by a group of Austrian skiers, Samine and U were near the bottom of the run switching back to the uphill mode. U, Smaine, and the Austrian skier were all buried at that point. According to reports, U was buried for over 25 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters.
