The Masked Singer is based on the King of Mask Singer television series from South Korea in 2015, which started the Masked Singer franchise. The format was spotted by executive producer Craig Plestis in a Los Angeles Thai restaurant in October 2017. He noticed the other customers watching an episode of the Thai version of the show on television while they waited for their meals. Plestis was curious and did some internet research before getting in touch with a representative of MBC America, a division of Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, the company that produced and aired the South Korean program (MBC). Plestis was able to obtain the rights to develop an American adaptation from the corporation with the aid of his agency, Steve Wohl of Paradigm Talent Agency.
