Richie English career
University
While studying at Mary Immaculate College, English was chosen to be part of the college's senior hurling team. In his second season, he was honored with the role of team captain. On 27 February 2016, he achieved a significant milestone by winning a Fitzgibbon Cup medal as Mary I secured their first-ever title with a thrilling 1-30 to 3-22 victory against the University of Limerick. Continuing his success, English played as full-back when Mary I defended their title in 2017, triumphing over Carlow Institute of Technology with a score of 3-24 to 1-19.
Club
From a young age, English became a member of the Doon club, actively participating in various grades at juvenile and underage levels. He experienced championship victories in the under-12, under-14, and under-15 categories. As part of the club's minor team, he achieved consecutive championship medals in 2012 and 2013, securing wins against Patrickswell and Na Piarsaigh respectively. English's debut in the senior championship for the club took place in 2012.
Inter-county
Minor and under-21
English's journey with Limerick began at the minor level in 2012, where the season ended with a defeat by Clare in the Munster Championship semi-final. The following year, he captained the minor team and tasted victory on 23 July 2013, playing as right corner-back when Limerick secured their first Munster Championship title in 29 years, beating Waterford with a score of 1-20 to 4-08.
In 2014, English moved on to join the Limerick under-21 hurling team. In his second season, he won a Munster Championship medal after a hard-fought 0-22 to 0-19 win over Clare in the final. Later, on 12 September 2015, English played as full-back when Limerick emerged victorious against Wexford in the All-Ireland final. He was then recognized for his outstanding performance by being named the Bord Gáis Energy Player of the Year for that season.
Senior
Making his way into the senior ranks, English joined the Limerick senior hurling team in January 2014. On 13 February 2016, he made his senior debut as left corner-back during a National League victory against Wexford. In the championship, he earned his first start in a Munster Championship semi-final but faced a 3-11 to 1-16 defeat by Tipperary.
A significant highlight in English's senior career was on 19 August 2018, when he played as left corner-back during Limerick's historic All-Ireland title win, defeating Galway with a score of 3-16 to 2-18. Following this achievement, he was honored by being named on The Sunday Game Team of the Year and received an All-Star Award that season.
On 31 March 2019, English played as left corner-back in Limerick's National League final against Waterford at Croke Park, contributing to their 1-24 to 0-19 victory and earning a winners' medal. However, this triumph was met with sorrow as his father, Paddy English, passed away after a prolonged illness. On 30 June 2019, he secured a Munster Championship medal in the same position, helping Limerick defeat Tipperary 2-26 to 2-14 in the final. His exceptional performances earned him a nomination for a second All-Star award that year.
Unfortunately, his season was cut short on 23 February 2020, as he sustained a cruciate injury, ruling him out for the remainder of the year.
