O'Donoghue became a member of the Na Piarsaigh club at a young age and actively participated in all grades during his juvenile and underage years. He achieved championship success in the under-16, minor, and under-21 categories.

On 6 October 2013, O'Donoghue played as right wing-forward when Na Piarsaigh secured a 0-14 to 0-12 victory over Adare, winning the Limerick Senior Championship. He was later moved to the midfield position for the Munster Championship, where he helped his team clinch a provincial medal after a convincing 4-14 to 0-08 win against Sixmilebridge in the final.

Continuing his success, O'Donoghue earned a second Limerick Championship medal on 11 October 2015, following a 1-22 to 4-12 victory over Patrickswell in the final. In the same season, he won his second Munster medal after Na Piarsaigh triumphed with a score of 2-18 to 2-11 against Ballygunner. On 17 March 2016, O'Donoghue added an All-Ireland medal to his collection as Na Piarsaigh emerged victorious with a 2-25 to 2-14 win over Ruairí Óg in the final.

In the 2017 championship, O'Donoghue secured a third Limerick Championship medal after Na Piarsaigh defeated Kilmallock 1-22 to 2-14 in the final. He also won his third Munster Championship medal when Na Piarsaigh beat Ballygunner 3-15 to 2-10 in the final. However, in the All-Ireland final on 17 March 2018, Na Piarsaigh suffered a defeat against Cuala.

On 27 October 2018, O'Donoghue achieved his fourth Limerick Championship medal while serving as the captain of Na Piarsaigh. The team secured a 2-22 to 3-10 victory over Doon.

Retaining the captaincy in the 2019 championship, O'Donoghue led Na Piarsaigh to the final. Unfortunately, they surrendered their title with a 1-17 to 0-15 defeat against Patrickswell in the 2019 final.

On 19 September 2020, O'Donoghue once again captained Na Piarsaigh to the final, marking their eighth appearance in ten seasons. He played a crucial role in their success as they secured their fifth winners' medal with an impressive 5-27 to 1-12 victory over Doon.

Inter-county

Under-21

In 2014, O'Donoghue joined the Limerick under-21 hurling team and later showcased his versatility by also joining the Limerick under-21 Gaelic football team.

Senior

On 19 February 2017, O'Donoghue made his debut appearance for the Limerick senior hurling team during a National Hurling League match, where they secured a convincing 6-21 to 3-08 victory against Kerry. In the subsequent league semi-final against Tipperary, he scored his first goal, despite Limerick suffering a 1-21 to 1-11 defeat.

A pivotal moment in O'Donoghue's career occurred on 19 August 2018, when he was introduced as a substitute in the 66th minute for Darragh O'Donovan. In that game, Limerick claimed their first All-Ireland title in 45 years, achieving a thrilling 3-16 to 2-18 victory over Galway in the final.

In December 2018, O'Donoghue earned a spot on the Limerick panel for the upcoming season. However, injury prevented his participation in the National League, although he returned to training in March 2019. On 30 June 2019, he won a Munster Championship medal at midfield after Limerick's impressive 2-26 to 2-14 win over Tipperary in the final. This successful season earned him his first All-Star nomination as well.
