The Plot of The Little Mermaid
Ariel is a mermaid princess and the youngest daughter of King Triton, who rules over the merpeople of Atlantica. Despite never having seen it, Ariel is captivated by the human world, which is forbidden to Merfolk due to the tragic death of her mother caused by a human. Alongside her friends, Flounder, a sergeant major fish, and Scuttle, a Northern gannet, Ariel collects human objects. One day, Ariel misses an important gathering with her sisters, and King Triton scolds her. Intrigued by fireworks above the ocean, Ariel surfaces to get a closer look. She discovers the source of the fireworks to be a ship carrying Prince Eric, a prince from a nearby kingdom.
Eavesdropping on Eric's desire to explore the unknown and help his people, Ariel witnesses a storm causing the ship to crash. Swiftly, she rescues Eric and brings him to shore, using her enchanting voice to save his life. Before Eric fully regains consciousness, Ariel quickly departs. Once Eric recovers, his adoptive mother forbids him from sailing again. Ariel's sisters comment on her absent-mindedness, unaware of her heroic act. Triton, having overheard, questions Sebastian, his advisor, and learns about Ariel's bravery in saving a human.
Angered, Triton confronts Ariel in her grotto and destroys her collection of human items when she refuses to promise never to visit the surface again. Alone, Ariel encounters a pair of electric-powered moray eels who introduce her to Ursula, Triton's estranged younger sister, and Ariel's aunt. Ursula offers Ariel assistance. Ariel follows the eels to Ursula's lair, where a deal is presented: Ariel will be transformed into a human for three days, during which she must receive true love's kiss from Eric to permanently remain human. If she fails, she will transform back into a mermaid, and Ursula will claim her.
Accepting the deal, Ariel sacrifices her tail, ability to breathe underwater, and her siren voice, which Ursula keeps in a nautilus shell. With her new human legs, Ariel is accompanied to the surface by Flounder and Sebastian, and she is rescued by a fisherman who brings her to Eric's kingdom and castle. Eric, who has been searching desperately for the woman who saved him, eagerly meets Ariel upon hearing of her arrival. However, her lack of voice causes Eric to turn away. Later, while exploring the castle, Ariel discovers Eric's collection of treasures from his travels, bonding with him over their shared interests.
The following day, Eric takes Ariel on a tour of his kingdom. Sebastian realizes that Ursula's spell is causing Ariel to forget the need for a kiss from Eric. Joined by Scuttle and Flounder, they attempt to bring the two together. Despite their efforts, Ursula's eels interfere, and Ursula, disguised as a beautiful woman named Vanessa, uses Ariel's voice to enchant Eric. The next morning, Ariel and her friends discover that Eric plans to announce his engagement to Vanessa. Scuttle exposes Vanessa's true identity to Ariel, who rushes to the engagement party and confronts Ursula, shattering the nautilus shell around her neck.
Ariel's voice is restored, breaking the enchantment on Eric. However, as the sun sets, Ariel transforms back into a mermaid, and Ursula reverts to her original form, seizing Ariel and diving into the ocean.
