Oscars 2023
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) held the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, to recognize outstanding films released in 2022. The event was produced by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, with Weiss also serving as director, and was broadcast in the U.S. by ABC. Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel hosted the ceremony for the third time, following his hosting duties at the 89th and 90th editions of the awards in 2017 and 2018. The film Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the ceremony, receiving seven awards, including Best Picture, and garnering the most nominations of any film with eleven. Other notable winners included All Quiet on the Western Front, which received four awards, and The Whale, which took home two awards.
Who won Best Actor 2023?
Brendan Fraser won the Best Actor award at the 2023 Oscars for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." The 54-year-old actor, who is known for his role in "The Mummy" trilogy, played a reclusive but kind-hearted English teacher weighing 270 kg in the film. Fraser was up against two other first-time nominees in the category, Austin Butler for "Elvis" and Colin Farrell for "The Banshees of Inisherin."
Did Brendan Fraser win an Oscar?
Brendan Fraser won the coveted best actor Oscar at the 2023 Academy Awards in Los Angeles for his role in "The Whale." Directed by Darren Aronofsky and adapted by Samuel D Hunter from his own play, the film features Fraser as a morbidly obese English teacher. Fraser emerged victorious over strong competition from other first-time Oscar nominees, Austin Butler and Colin Farrell, who were both nominated for their roles in "Elvis" and "The Banshees of Inisherin," respectively. Fraser has already won the best actor awards at the Screen Actors Guild and Critics' Choice awards, in addition to being nominated for best actor at the Baftas and Golden Globes for film drama. However, he chose not to attend the latter event, as he alleged that the Golden Globes' former president, Philip Berk, had sexually assaulted him in 2003. Although an internal investigation concluded that Berk had "inappropriately touched" Fraser, it deemed Berk's action to be intended as a joke rather than a sexual advance, while Berk himself denied the allegation. Fraser was visibly moved as he took the stage, exclaiming, "So this is what the multiverse looks like!" He proceeded to express his gratitude to the film's director, Darren Aronofsky, and writer Samuel Hunter, acknowledging the emotional depth they brought to the project. "You laid your whale-sized hearts bare so we could see into your souls," he said. Fraser concluded his speech by reflecting on his early struggles in the industry, noting that he didn't fully appreciate his own talents until they were tested. "I started in this business 30 years ago," he said. "Things didn't come easily to me, but there was a facility I didn't appreciate at the time until it stopped." He ended on a personal note, thanking his three sons and his wife Afton Smith, whom he referred to as his "first mate."
