In some cases, Microsoft might have released the update without ensuring its ability. If that update becomes problematic, then Windows Update regresses the installation and shows the error 0x80092004. However, corrupt system files could also cause this problem.

1. Set the correct date and timings

  • Set the correct date and time in the Date and Time dialog box. If they are not correct, tap the Change Date and Time button, and then continue with the instructions on the screen.
  • Otherwise, if the date and time are correct, then tap OK to close the Date and Time dialog box.

2. Check for Corrupt System Files

  • First, tap the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu.
  • Next, enter or type "CMD" (without quotes) into the search bar.
  • Now, right-click Command Prompt in the search results. Then, tap Run as Administrator.
  • After that, tap the Yes button on the User Account Control dialog.
  • After the Command Prompt (Admin) opens, type the below-given command and hit Enter.

            DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  • Now, wait for the scan to finish. Make sure that you do not make any interruptions while scanning. So, plug in your PC to avoid running out of battery power.
  • After that, enter or type in the below-given command and hit Enter.

             Sfc /scannow

  • Make sure you leave a space between ‘Sfc’ and ‘/scannow.’
  • When the SFC scan completes, close Command Prompt (Admin) and then restart your PC. Finally, attempt the Windows update again.

3. Check for updates to Windows and install them

  • First, open the Control Panel and tap on the System and Security icon.
  • Next, in the System and Security window, tap on the Windows Update icon.
  • After that, tap the Check for Updates button.
  • Next, tap the Download and install updates button on the Check for Updates window.
  • Tap the Install updates button on the Download and install updates window.
  • Now, tap the Installing updates from Microsoft Update button on the Install updates window.
  • After that, tap the OK button on the Installing updates from the Microsoft Update window.
  • Then the progress of the update will be shown on the Install Updates window.
  • Once the update is complete, tap the OK button.
  • Finally, close the Windows Update window.

4. Disable Antivirus software

You could once temporarily disable the antivirus software to check if the issue is solved. 

  • First, open your antivirus software and tap on the " disable " button.
  • Next, tap the "update" button to install the latest updates.
  • Once the updates are installed, attempt to reinstall your antivirus software.

5. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter 

You could use the below steps to run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

  • First, open the Control Panel and tap on the System and Security category.
  • Next, tap the Windows Update icon.
  • Next, a window appears in which you tap the Check for Updates button.
  • After that, if any updates exist, then the Windows Update window will display a list of available updates.
  • Then, choose the appropriate updates and tap on the Install button.
  • If there are any issues while installing the updates, then a list of problems and solutions will be shown on the Windows Update window.
  • Then, choose the correct problem and tap the Fix button.
  • If the issue is fixed, the Windows Update window will display a message that the updates were successfully installed.
  • If the issue is not solved, the Windows Update window will display a message that the updates were not installed successfully and give instructions on how to solve the problem.

6. Clear the Windows Update Temporary Cache Folder

  • If the system updates downloads and their installation fails, then it will store the temporary files and disrupt your PC. So, clearing the Windows Update temporary cache Folder could be an effective fix.
  • First, navigate to the Start menu and type "CMD" (without quotes) into the search bar.
  • Next, make right-click on Command Prompt and tap "Run as Administrator."
  • On the User Account Control prompt, tap Yes. This will permit the Command Prompt to make changes to your computer.
  • Then, run the following commands one after the other, as given below. Next, hit enter to run them.

            net stop wuauserv

            net start cryptSvc

            net start bits

           net start msiserver

Note: Each command will stop a particular process. So, the Windows Update service, the cryptographic service, the background intelligent transfer service (BITS) and the MSI installer will be stopped.

  • After stopping the services, tap Windows + E to open File Explorer and go to C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution.
  • Now, tap Ctrl + A to choose all the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder. Then, tap Shift + Delete.

Note: If the system indicates that the files are in use, then restart your computer and delete these files again.

  • Now, you must restart the services you stopped earlier. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) and run the following lines:

            net start wuauserv

            net start cryptSvc

            net start bits

            net start msiserver

  • Finally, close the Command Prompt (Admin) window and close File Explorer. Finally, restart your computer.

7. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

You could try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter once. For that, you can use the below steps:

  • First, open the Windows Settings app by simply tapping the Windows + I combination.
  • Next, tap the Update & Security tile.
  • After that, tap on Troubleshoot in the left pane.
  • Next, choose Windows Update and tap the "Run the Troubleshooter" button.
  • Finally, restart your PC after the scan is complete.
