In the end, Disney took a different approach for the series finale of Wizards of Waverly Place, opting for a more action-packed spectacle. The finale centered around a family wizard competition, where Justin emerged as the initial winner. However, it was later revealed that Alex was the true winner. Fortunately, both siblings were allowed to retain their magical powers, but poor Max didn't have the same outcome.
Despite this, it was still a satisfying episode that provided the happy-ever-after ending the characters deserved. Peter Murrieta, the creator of the show, had a different vision for the finale. He originally wanted Alex to follow in her father's footsteps by winning the competition but chose to give up her powers for love and be with Mason. In this alternate ending idea, Justin would have become the family wizard instead.
When David DeLuise, one of the actors in the show, heard about this original ending concept, he was moved to tears. It's understandable because the alternative ending would have been incredibly heartwarming and wholesome.

Wizards of Waverly Place Plot
Jerry and Theresa Russo, along with their three children Justin, Alex, and Max, go on a magic-free vacation to the Caribbean. They encounter a street magician named Archie who seeks their help in finding the Stone of Dreams to reverse a spell on a parrot named Giselle. Alex, after an argument with her mother, angrily wishes that her parents had never met, which creates an alternate reality where her parents don't remember their children.
To reverse the spell, Justin and Alex embark on a quest to find the Stone of Dreams, guided by Archie. Max stays behind and loses his memory, leading Jerry and Theresa to realize something is wrong. They eventually meet up with Alex and Justin, who explain their situation. In a contest, Alex wins and becomes a full wizard, while Justin loses his memories and is sucked into non-existence.
Theresa recovers her memory and retrieves the Stone of Dreams from Giselle, who had used them for her own gain. Back at the battlefield, Alex becomes desperate until Theresa arrives with the Stone and restores everything back to normal. The family reunites, with full memories intact, and continues their vacation happily.
