What Anime is YOASOBI's New Song From?

YOASOBI, one of Japan's rapidly emerging J-pop acts, has unveiled their latest song titled "Idol." Accompanied by a captivating music video, the track serves as a collaboration with the popular anime series 'Oshi no Ko,' also serving as its theme song. 'Oshi no Ko' is based on the manga series created by Akasaka Aka and illustrated by Yokoyari Mengo.

The new song showcases the talent of the nine-member anime dance group known as REAL AKIBA BOYS, who draw inspiration from Akihabara, often referred to as "the land of the holy idols." Together, YOASOBI and REAL AKIBA BOYS bring a unique and exciting fusion of music and animation to captivate their audience.

History of Yoasobi

Both members of Yoasobi had established themselves in the music industry prior to joining forces as a duo. Ayase (born April 4, 1994), who is a record producer, songwriter, and former vocalist of the rock band Davici, began utilizing Vocaloid software to create songs. He gained recognition after uploading his debut track, "Sentensei Assault Girl," on the video hosting platform Niconico in 2018. Ayase's popularity further soared with his 2019 song titled "Last Resort."

Later that year, he released his first extended play, Ghost City Tokyo. On the other hand, Lilas Ikuta (born September 25, 2000), who performs as Ikura in Yoasobi, is a singer-songwriter and was a member of the cover group Plusonica from 2017 to 2021. Prior to joining Yoasobi, she released her solo demo CD, "15 no Omoi," in 2016 and two EPs, "Rerise" in 2018 and "Jukebox" in 2019, through the independent label After School.

In 2019, Ayase received an offer from Yohei Yashiro and Shuya Yamamoto of Sony Music Entertainment Japan to collaborate on a project involving the production of songs inspired by short stories posted on Monogatary.com, a social media platform focused on creative writing and illustrations, operated by SMEJ. During the discussions regarding vocalists for the project, Ayase discovered Ikuta on Instagram, where she had shared her own music and cover performances.

He convinced her to join him and form the duo. The name "Yoasobi" was chosen for the duo and derived from the Japanese word "yoasobi," which means "nightlife." It symbolizes their desire to embrace various creative challenges, comparing their individual careers to daytime and their Yoasobi project to nighttime. The duo adopted the slogan "novel into music" to represent their artistic approach.
