Z Nation, a horror television series created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler and produced by The Asylum, first premiered on Syfy on September 12, 2014. Filmed in the Spokane, Washington area, the show's third season was initially announced to be preceded by a TV movie introducing new characters for the upcoming season.
However, the movie was later presented as the first two episodes of the third season. Despite being renewed for a fifth season in December 2017, Syfy cancelled the show on December 22, 2018, after five seasons. The series concluded with its 68th and final episode airing on December 28, 2018.
Z Nation Ending Explained
Alvin Bernard Murphy, a former convict, becomes the sole survivor of zombie bites after being part of a scientific experiment. The group of survivors must transport him to a government laboratory in California, as he is believed to be the only solution to the ZN1 virus due to his apparent immunity. Over time, Murphy's appearance changes, and he becomes part-zombie, able to communicate with them and make them do his bidding.
He also gains the ability to direct others through telepathy after exposing them to his saliva or blood. In season 3, he escapes from Zona and decides to make the human race into zombie-human hybrids under his control. In season 4, he loses his abilities after being cured at Zona, but regains them after being bitten by Lucy. In the series finale, he learns the cure for the zombie virus after consuming Sun Mei's brain, leaving his intentions ambiguous.
Doc, a wellness counselor and former Navy serviceman, becomes the group's de facto medic due to his medical knowledge acquired from watching ER. He is a former member of the Blue Sky Camp and forms an attachment with 10k, acting as a father figure. Doc is also the first to befriend Murphy and helps Serena during Lucy's birth in season 2. In season 3, he reveals his PhD in Clinical Psychology and helps patients in a psychiatric hospital.
Z Nation Plot
Z Nation takes place three years into a zombie apocalypse that was caused by a deadly virus, which has already wiped out most of humanity. Before society collapsed, Murphy was one of three inmates at a naval prison who were unwillingly used for a government experiment. Each inmate was given a different vaccine, and Murphy was the only one to survive.
He is the only known survivor of a zombie bite and his blood contains the antibodies that could potentially lead to a vaccine. However, he is also mutating into a hybrid between zombie and human, with his skin shedding and turning blue. He has the ability to control certain types of zombies, but he has not yet turned into a full zombie and still maintains control over himself.
The series follows a small group of survivors, led by Simon "Citizen Z" Cruller, as they try to transport Murphy from New York to a functioning CDC lab in California. However, Murphy has a dark secret about his condition that puts them all in danger.

Z Nation's arrival on Syfy has been a great thing for The Walking Dead, which has been highly popular but often undervalued critically. Thanks to Z Nation's success, The Walking Dead may now be better appreciated for its writing, acting, and storytelling capabilities instead of just relying on zombies to attract audiences.
For those who enjoy a lot of gore and zombie action without much of a plot, Z Nation may be more their style. While the show is a B-level entry, it still offers some entertaining moments and could improve on some of its initial flaws.
